My Musing
What is leadership?
Although the midrash starts out with a legal discussion of the havdalah light, the focus is the issue of difference and how differences can highlight the best in two people but it should not create struggle. In fact leaders should work on creating harmony.

And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to show the way before him unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.

Our master should instruct: When do we bless the candle on Saturday night after the Shabbat?
Thus taught our teachers: We do not bless the candle until the light will be apparent. And from where did we learn this? From the Holy One, blessed be He, as it says, " And God saw the light, that it was good;" and after that the verse continues, "and God divided the light from the darkness." Rabbi Ze'ira ben Abahum said, "from here we learn that we bless the candle when the light will be recognized"

Said Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, "Said the Holy One, blessed be He, to Israel, 'honor the commandments, since they are my emissaries, and the messenger of a person is like the person. If you honored them, it is as if you honored Me, and if you belittle them, it is as if you belittled My honor."
There is no one who honored the commandments and fulfilled the Torah like Jacob, as it says, " And the boys grew; and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents." And he was anguished by his children. Said to him the Holy One, blessed be He, "on your life! You lost one, you will find three, Joseph, Menashe, and Ephraim. Once they came and informed Jacob that Yoseph was alive, he sent Yehudah as an ambassador to him.

"And he sent Judah before him" this is what scripture writes, " Dominion and fear are with Him; He maketh peace in His high places."
"Dominion" is the angle Michael, "fear" is the angel Gabriel. Michael is from the water and Gabriel is from the fire, and they stand before the Divine presence and do not afflict one to the other. That is the fulfillment of the verse. " He maketh peace in His high places"
Said Rabbi Shimon, "The entire firmament is of water, and the angles are of fire, and His servants are a licking flame, and the water does not extinguish the fire and the fire does not singe the water. Judah and Joseph one is the lion and one is the bull. Yesterday they were fighting and now Jacob sends him to Joseph as it says, "And he sent Judah before him" that is the fulfillment of "He maketh peace in His high places"

My Musing
This week's midrash focuses on God's mercy on the world, the righteous and then segues to Joseph's mercy on his brothers. Revenge may be sweet, but the best revenge is showing your adversary that when you get the upper hand you actually are merciful.

Now Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, and Jacob said unto his sons: 'Why do ye look one upon another?'

This is what scripture said, " I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." Said Rabbi Samuel bar Nachman, 'this verse was recited by the minister of the world; "I have been young" from the days of Adam, and "now am old" until the days of the messiah, "yet have I not seen" that the Holy One, blessed be He, left the world bereft of the righteous. Rather, in every generation He rises up the righteous. As Rabbi Tanhum said, in the name of Rabbi Acha, 'The world is never lacking thirty righteous like Abraham, as it says, " seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?" shall (yiheyeh) equals 30 in gematria (numeral calculations with values assigned to the letters)''

Another idea, "I have been young and now am old" the Holy One, blessed be Hem does not leave the righteous in times of famine, not them and not their children. Rather, when famine comes to the world, the holy One, blessed be He, fixes for them from where their nutrition will come. And so you find with Eliyahu where He set uop where he will find food. As it says, " 'Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there; behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.'" And similarly you find, " 'Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.'" And similarly "And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar." And similarly with Yaakov when the famine came, the Holy One, blessed be He, established Yoseph to support him as it says, " And Joseph sustained his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to the want of their little ones." That is the fulfillment of the verse, "Now Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt"
What is written above? " And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph to buy corn; because the famine was sore in all the earth." Because he gave it himself, as it says, " And Joseph laid up corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until they left off numbering; for it was without number."
"And the seven years of plenty, that was in the land of Egypt, came to an end. And the seven years of famine began to come, according as Joseph had said; and there was famine in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread."
What does ti mean, "according as Joseph had said"? Said Rabbi Yehudah bar Shalom, 'There should have been fourteen years of famine as Joseph said " And the seven lean and ill-favoured kine that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind; they shall be seven years of famine." That adds to 14. Rather, Joseph decreed and they were reduced to 7 years as it says, " And the seven years of famine began to come, according as Joseph had said; and there was famine in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread."

Therefore it is written, ""according as Joseph had said." Immediately, Yaakov heard that there was corn in Egypt and said to his sons, "And he said: 'Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt. Get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.'"
"And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn from Egypt." And why ten? That they have the ability to ward off bad events. As when the Holy One, blessed be He, came to destroy Sodom and Abraham, our father, requested mercy on them from the heavens, he began with counting at 50 and went down to 10. As it says, " And he said: 'Oh, let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once. Peradventure ten shall be found there.' And He said: 'I will not destroy it for the ten's sake.'" Because ten is a congregation as it says, " 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me." And it is written, "A Psalm of Asaph. God standeth in the congregation of God; in the midst of the judges He judgeth:" Therefore it says, ""And Joseph's ten brethren went down" since with Sodom it was also until ten.

"And the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came; for the famine was in the land of Canaan." That no one should recognize them. Said the Holy One, blessed be He, "you said, " Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say: An evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.'" Where does the dream come to bear? " And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spoke roughly with them; and he said unto them: 'Whence come ye?' And they said: 'From the land of Canaan to buy food.' And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew him not." They did not have mercy on Joseph but he had mercy on them.

My Musing

The Torahis not a story book, the Torah is not a history book. This refrain is one of the underlying messages of the midrash selection this week. Every word has import and in this case comes to illustrate the unique way that Joseph gets caught in the very net he cast.

“These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being still a lad even with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father. Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colours.”

“because he was the son of his old age”
A son of his image, that he was identical to him.
Rabbi Yishmael said, therefore he was called “a son of his old age” from the verse, “And Joseph sustained his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to the want of their little ones.”
A son of his father’s old age.
And since he saw in his dream that he was destined to rule, and he told his father and his brothers were jealous.

“Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father”
He said to his father, ‘my brothers are eating the limb of a live animal’. Said to him the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘On Your Life!. On the very thing that came out of your mouth, you will be suspected’
“And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, that did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.”
And because he spoke evil speech about them, and therefore they despised him. And it snowballed and our forefathers went down to Egypt and were enslaved for four hundred years. Said Yaakov to Joseph, “And he said to him: 'Go now, see whether it is well with thy brethren, and well with the flock; and bring me back word.' So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.” A place that is destined for bad tidings. There Dinah was violated, In Shechem Joseph was sold, and in Shechem the kingdom was split, “Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and he went out from thence, and built Penuel.”

“And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field. And the man asked

him, saying: 'What seekest thou?'” There is no “man” mentioned in scripture other than Gabriel, as it says, “yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, approached close to me about the time of the evening offering.”

“And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.” “and they took him, and cast him into the pit--and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.” Water was absent, but snakes and scorpions were in it.
What did Reuben do? He went and sat by the nearby mountains to go in the night and bring Joseph up, and the nine brothers were sitting in another place, unified, as one person with a unified intent to kill him. The Yishmaelite caravan passed and they said, “Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened unto him.”

They sent him to the edge of the wilderness, and sold him for 20 silver pieces. Each one took two pieces of silver to buy shoes for their feet. And should it enter your mind that a youth as fine as Joseph should only fetch 20 silver pieces?! Rather, since he was thrown into the pit with snakes and scorpions, he became pale and looked green. Therefore they sold him for 20 silver pieces.

Empathy is a difficult value to develop. But if we understand that our wealth and our greatness are from God, the tneuousness of our position, can quickly create in us tghe empathy that Torah demands. It is not charity, but tzedakah. It is not caritas, the love, but the chiyuv, the obligation of caring for the other, that makes us give tzedakah. We cannot choose, we just must give to the needy.

And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.

Our teacher should instruct: One who does not allow the poor to glean in their field, what is the law?
Thus taught our sages: ‘One who does not allow the poor to glean in his field, or one who only allows one person to glean, but restricts another, or assists one poor person during the harvest but not another, this is considered stealing from the poor. On this it is said, “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.” That is the boundary of the poor. Said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘I put you of high stature and the poor of low. I can make you below and them above. Why? Because I am a judge. As it says, “For God is judge; He putteth down one, and lifteth up another.”

A Matron asked Rabbi Yosi ben Halafta, “ For how many days did the Holy One, blessed be He, create His world?”
He said to her, “for six days, as it is written, “For six days, made God, the heavens and the Earth, the sea and all in them, and rested on the seventh day, therefore did God bless the Sabbath Day and sanctify it”
Said she to him, “And from then till now, what does He do?”

He said to her, “He makes ladders, raises one up. Lowers one down; makes one wealthy, and makes one poor. Know that when Yaakov left Aram Naharayim, it is written regarding him, “I am not worthy of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which Thou hast shown unto Thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two camps.” And not only that but, “And he lighted upon the place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.” If he had a pilloe or cushion he would have placed it under his head. But when he entered the house of Laban he became wealthy. As it says, “And the man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, and maid-servants and men-servants, and camels and asses.” From where, from the blessings of his fathers. “and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land of thy sojournings, which God gave unto Abraham.'”And what was the blessing of Abraham, “And Abraham was old, well stricken in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.” When he left the house of Laban, The Holy One, blessed be He, said, “I must bless him”. Immediately, the Holy One, blessed be He, revealed Himself to him. As it says, And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him”

My Musing
Silence is golden. But it is often frustrating. Why wait? Why not tell? But the midrash explains that perhaps as much as we would think that we must protest, there are times that a cost benefit analysis will tell you to stay quiet and allow the divine plan to work.

"And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb."

Our master should instruct: One who sees a remarkably handsome person, what blessing should be recited?
This is what our rabbis taught: One who sees good animals, nice trees, recites: That it is so in His world"
And you cannot find one more pretty than Rachel, and it is because of her beauty that Jacob requested to marry her. And he would send gifts to be given to Rachel, and Laban would give them to Leah, and Rachel would be silent.

Said Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel, 'all my life, I was raised among the sages, and I did not find anything better for the body than silence'

Rachel grasped silence; her children stood in silence. She saw her gifts in the hands of her sister and she was quiet. Her son, Benjamin was honored with the Yashphe stone for the ephod. He knew about th sale of Joseph remained quiet. That is the Yashphe- it has a mouth but is silent. Saul her descendent, "And Saul said unto his uncle: 'He told us plainly that the asses were found.' But concerning the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spoke, he told him not", Esther, "Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her; for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him"

Leah grasped praise and gratitude. This was continued in her progeny with praise and gratitude after her. "And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she said: 'This time will I praise the LORD.' Therefore she called his name Judah; and she left off bearing." Judah, her son "Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father's sons shall bow down before thee." David, "'O give thanks unto the LORD, for He is good, for His mercy endureth for ever.'" Daniel prayed and acknowledged, "And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house--now his windows were open in his upper chamber toward Jerusalem--and he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime."

Said Rabbi Yehudah, silence is greater, since in the merit of the silence of Rachel, she merited to have the tribes of Ephraim and Menashe beyond the tribes. And why did she stay silent? Said Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, 'she reasoned, if I send Jacob notice that my father gives the gifts to Leah, he will not take me nor will father marry me to him, and I will be far removed fro the body of this great righteous man. Said to her, the Holy One, blessed be He, 'you were silent, on your life, in the merit of your silence, I will remember you, as it says, "And God remembered Rachel"

Toldot

My Musing
No matter what we do well there is always going to be a detractor to try to take us down a notch. It seems to be our destiny. The only recourse is to always do the right thing and then leave it in God's hands, as illustrated by this week's midrash.

"And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begot Isaac."

"Abraham begot Isaac." Said Rabbi Isaac, there is no generation that does not have its detractors. When Nabal sheered the sheep, (king) David sent his young servants to him saying, " Ask thy young men, and they will tell thee; wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes; for we come on a good day; give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thy hand, unto thy servants, and to thy son David.'" Replied to them Nabal, " And Nabal answered David's servants, and said: 'Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants now-a-days that break away every man from his master; shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men of whom I know not whence they are?'" Immediately hey returned to Daivd and old him of Nabal's words. David stood and girded himself and all his warriors to go to Nabal to vanquish him. " But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying: 'Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he flew upon them." When she heard this, she prepared a present and went to Daivd, as it says, " Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. And she said unto her young men: 'Go on before me; behold, I come after you.' But she told not her husband Nabal." All that is contained there.

Immediately, " And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said: 'Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept back His servant from evil; and the evil-doing of Nabal hath the LORD returned upon his own head.' And David sent and spoke concerning Abigail, to take her to him to wife."

And after he brought her in, he separated from her for three months to know if she was pregnant from Nabal or not. After three months, he had relations with her and she became pregnant from him. And there were the detractors of the generation impugning that she became pregnant from Nabal and not David . What did the Holy One, blessed be He, do? He commanded the angel in charge of formation of the child and his image, and said to him, 'go and form him in the image of David his father, that all should testify that David is his father.' From where? Such that it is written, "And unto David were sons born in Hebron; and his first-born was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;"

What is taught by the name Chile'ab? That he was all his father; that all who would see him would say, 'David is surely this one's father.'
And similarly, Abraham was similar to Isaac, and the living beings of the world, could not distinguish between father and son, until Abraham requested that there needs to be some differentiation between father and son. And He separated them with old age. Therefore it says, " And Abraham was old, well stricken in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things."

Chayei Sarah

My Musing
Never rest on your laurels. Simple enough. Because you never know what will in the end be your claim to fame.

"And Abraham took another wife, and her name was Keturah"

"And Avraham added" this is what the Scripture said, "And thy beginning was small, yet thy end should greatly increase." This is referring to Moshe. Said Rabbi Samuel bar Nachman, seven days the Holy One, blessed be He, enjoined Moshe at the bush and he fled, as it says, " And he said: 'Oh Lord, send, I pray Thee, by the hand of him whom Thou wilt send.'" And it is written, " And Moses said unto the LORD: 'Oh Lord, I am not a man of words, neither heretofore, nor since Thou hast spoken unto Thy servant; for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.'" And it says, " Moreover He said: 'I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God."

"yet thy end should greatly increase." As it is written, " with him do I speak mouth to mouth, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD doth he behold; wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses?'" Said Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, ' that he saw the visage immediately"

Another idea, ""And thy beginning was small," this is Abraham who had lived 100 years and he did not have a son. And after he was pacified by the Holy One blessed be He. Rabbi Judah bar Simon, and Rabbi Chana in the same of Rabbi Yochanan, said, "bring him up above the atmosphere (the cap of the heaven)" as it says, "And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to count them'; and He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'" The usage of the word "look', habet, is only used to denote looking down from a high perch. Said to Him the Holy One, blessed be He, "one who is beneath the constellations is subject to it, but you who have travelled above it, raise up your head.

Despite this, at 100 years old, he had a son. That is the fulfillment of the verse, """And thy beginning was small," which refers to Abraham. "yet thy end should greatly increase." Refers to his marrying another wife and had with her more children in the end as it says, "And Abraham increased" that is what the Scriptures say, "In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand; for thou knowest not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good."

Rabbi Eliezer said, 'with regards to agriculture the scriptures are speaking. Said Solomon, 'If you sow during the season, you will not stand during the harvest'. As it says, "and in the evening withhold not thy hand" Why? " for thou knowest not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good."
Rabbi Yehoshua said, If comes before you in the morning the opportunity to fulfill a commandment, do it, and in the evening, if the opportunity comes before you "withhold not your hand". Why? For thou knowest not which of them will stand for you, either the morning opportunity or the evening opportunity or "whether they both shall be alike good." Rabbi Akiva said, ""In the morning sow thy seed" If you develop many students do not rest on your laurels and neglect to develop students in your old age. It happened to Akiva that he had 300 students in his youth and they died. And if he had not developed students in his senior years he would have had no students recall his name as their source of Torah knowledge.

Another idea "In the morning sow thy seed" said Rabbi Yosi, If you take a wife in your youth, and she gives birth and then dies, take another wife later in life, "for thou knowest not…" and from who do we learn this? From Abraham, who in his youth he did not have any children save two and in his old age had 12.

Said Rabbi Levi, this is what the Holy One, blessed be He, said , ""seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?" that the sea went out during the generation of the bifg split (following the tower of Babel) and dispersed from the sons of Ham 30 families, as ti says, "So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city." Said to him the Holy One, blessed be He, 'from you, I am going to establish families and they are the 12 leaders from Yishmael and the 16 from here and the 2 nations from Isaac. That is the fulfillment of " and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him"
