Behar Bechukotai

“And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When a man shall clearly utter a vow of persons unto the LORD, according to thy valuation,”
This is what the Scripture says, “For who in the skies can be compared unto the LORD, who among the sons of might can be likened unto the LORD,”
Said Rabbi Levi, This is analogous to a king who built a state and lit two lanterns, and each visitor would call him Augustus. Said the king, all who built a state like this and lit two lanterns like I have lit is called Augustus, and I am not jealous. Similarly the Holy One, blessed be He, made the heavens and placed two lights there to light the world, the sun and the moon. As it says, “And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,” Said the Holy One, blessed be He, Whomever can make like these two lights, that they illuminate the world, can be equal to me. As it says, “For who in the skies can be compared (valued) unto the LORD, who among the sons of might can be likened unto the LORD,” If they can value two lanterns they will be like Me. And there is no mention of “value” other than light, as it says, “He shall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick before the LORD continually.”
This is what the scripture said, “Lift up your eyes on high, and see: who hath created these? He that bringeth out their host by number, He calleth them all by name; by the greatness of His might, and for that He is strong in power, not one faileth” “To whom then will ye liken Me, that I should be equal? saith the Holy One.” Do mot read it as “saith the Holy One’ but rather, “ay to Him, Holy” as it says, “In that day shall a man regard his Maker, and his eyes shall look to the Holy One of Israel.”
Another idea: “For who in the skies can be compared unto the LORD” Said Rabbi Abon the Levi, ‘Who is like you illuminte my eyes, that are darkened like that which is said, ““He shall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick”
Another idea: “For who in the skies can be compared unto the LORD” Said Rabbi Abon the Levi, Who is like you who clothes the naked. [this is written already in the order of Emor]
Another idea: Who is like You, sustainer of the ravenous, and there is no mention of the word “order” except for food, as it says, “Every sabbath day he shall set it in order before the LORD continually; it is from the children of Israel, an everlasting covenant.” And it is written, “And it shall be for Aaron and his sons; and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, a perpetual due.'”
Another idea: “For who in the skies can be compared unto the LORD” At the time the Hole One blessed be He, wanted to create the world and desired to create man, the ministering angels would say, “What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that Thou thinkest of him?” What will you ask of the man? Said to them the Holy One, blessed be He, And who will fulfill my commandments and my statutes and my teachings? They answered, “we will fulfill them!” Said to them, it is written in it, “This is the law: when a man dieth in a tent, every one that cometh into the tent, and every thing that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.” And you do not die amongst yourselves. It is written in it, “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If a woman be delivered, and bear a man-child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of the impurity of her sickness shall she be unclean.” And you do not give birth. It is written in it, “Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that only chew the cud, or of them that only part the hoof: the camel, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you.” And you do not eat amongst yourselves.  That is the Torah cannot be discharged by you. As it says, “Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.”  Once the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Israel to make a sanctuary and an altar, they began to offer sacrifices. The Holy One, blessed be He, began to command many commandments, on every item and they would comply. The Holy One, blessed be He, began to say to the ministering angels, “For who in the skies can be compared unto the LORD” like Israel values me that you said, What is man that he should be remembered” they order for me sacrifices as it says, “And he shall cut it into its pieces; and the priest shall lay them, with its head and its suet, in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar.” “s it is taken off from the ox of the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make them smoke upon the altar of burnt-offering.” They order before me tables as it says, “Every sabbath day he shall set it in order before the LORD continually; it is from the children of Israel, an everlasting covenant.” Is there among you one who can value the souls as it says, “And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When a man shall clearly utter a vow of persons unto the LORD, according to thy valuation,” That is the fulfillment of the verse “For who in the skies can be compared unto the LORD”

Emor 16 אמר

My Musing
What does it take to get beyond the worst mistake you can make? It takes a fortitude to accept responsibility for your actions and also for God to accept your new actions, even if they are only good thoughts.

“When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought forth, then it shall be seven days under the dam; but from the eighth day and thenceforth it may be accepted for an offering made by fire unto the LORD.”
This is what the Scripture said, “And now shall my head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me; and I will offer in His tabernacle sacrifices with trumpet-sound; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.” Since the Israelites did that act, the nations of the world would say “There is no future and there will be no return forever.
Once Israel heard that they will offer a sacrifice of an ox, they raised their heads as it says, ““And now shall my head be lifted up” and they would walk with their heads held high, and say, ‘Now we know that we are desired by the Holy One, blessed be He, as it says, “and I will offer in His tabernacle sacrifices with trumpet-sound; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.”
“When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat”- there is a bull that is just born? Rather it is the calf that is born and grows into a bull! As it says to offer a bull, and why did it says to offer a bull? To atone for the figure of the bull, as it says, “Who forgiveth all thine iniquity; who healeth all thy diseases;”
You should know, come and see what is written, “And every one had four faces, and every one of them had four wings” What is also written there, “And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot; and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.” And for the atonement of Israel, it was added an additional two wings, as it says, “Above Him stood the seraphim; each one had six wings: with twain he covered his face and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.” Why? Said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘their legs should be covered as they are similar to calf’s feet’, that is to seem, that they should not see them and be reminded of the act of the calf. With two they will cover the legs, Why so much? To atone for Israel, as it says, ““Who forgiveth all thine iniquity”
There is no greater among the birds than the griffon vulture, and its face were made to an animal as it says, “As for the likeness of their faces, they had the face of a man; and they four had the face of a lion on the right side; and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four had also the face of a griffon vulture.” The greatest of the animals is the lion, and it was made for the face of the lion, as it says, “the face of a lion on the right side”. The ox is the most powerful of the animals and was made the face for the animal side as it says, “and they four had the face of an ox on the left side;”

“The face of man” for Israel, The Holy One, blessed be He, erased the bull and put a cherub in its place. That you do find that there is no mention there of anything but a cherub, as it says, “and the four faces to one, the face of a cherub, and the face of the second was of a man, and the third the face of a lion and the fourth, the face of the griffon vulture” Why so much? To atone for Israel. That is the verse” ““Who forgiveth all thine iniquity”” And why did the Holy One, blessed be He, remove the calf? That Israel should be meritous before Him, and not only that but also, that when one of Israel entertains the thought of a sin or an evil act the Holy One, blessed be He does not attach it to his actions. And so David said, “If I had regarded iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not hear” And what does the Holy One, blessed be He hear when a man stands in prayer? As it says, “As for me, I said in my haste: 'I am cut off from before Thine eyes'; nevertheless Thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto Thee.” And not only that but, also two people sit and occupy themselves with Torah, the Holy One, blessed be He, listens to them ans it says, “Then they that feared the LORD spoke one with another; and the LORD hearkened, and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before Him, for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon His name.”
Said the Holy One. Blessed be He, “in the merit of the Torah that you are occupying yourselves with, “I listen and hear your prayers, but in the future until you call to me I will answer them, as it says, “Then they that feared the LORD spoke one with another; and the LORD hearkened, and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before Him, for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon His name.”

Acharei mot

My Musing

The burden on Aaron was incomprehensible. His sons had died and he had to begin the service. And God makes it clear that the success of the whole enterprise rests on him.

Rabbi Yochanan bar Yudan from the Galilee opened “Doth the vulture mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?”

Said the Holy One, blessed be He to Aaron,’ by the word of your mouth I would dwell upon the Ark or by the word of your mouth I would remove the Divine Presence from upon the ark.’ The first Temple, “She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the stronghold.” One resting and with the second Temple, “upon the crag of the rock, and the stronghold.”

And there they learned that when the ark was taken, there was a stone under it from the days of the first prophets and it was called Shtia- drinking. And why was it called Shtia? Said Rabbi Yossi bar Chalafta, ‘Because from it was drawn the water of the world’. And how was the prayer of the high priest composed on Yom Kippur? ‘May it be the will before you Lord our God and God of our fathers, that this coming year should be rainy, a year of inexpensive prices, a year of satiety, a year of pleasing will, a year of blessing, a year of faithful business, a year that your nation Israel will not require assistance one from another, and that one will not become powerful over another’

The rabbis of Caesarin said on our brothers in Caesarin that they should not rule over each other.

The rabbis of the south said on our brothers in the Sharon plain, that their houses should not become their graves.

“From thence she spieth out the prey; her eyes behold it afar off.” From there was the food for the whole year. “her eyes behold it afar off.” From Rosh Hashanah we would know what to expect. How? He would look at the smoke of the wood pile of the altar and if it would rise to the south, the south would be sated. If it would rise to the east he would know that the east would be sated. If it would rise to the north he would know that the north would be sated. If it would rise to the sky, he would know that the whole world will be sated. And after all the praise “Her young ones also suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is she.”

Rabbi Yudan in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi and Rabbi Berachia in the name of Rabbi Chiya bar Abba said, “approach, take up your brothers from the Holy” is not written here, rather from the face of the holy, as a person who says to his friend, take this deceased from in front of his father, since when his father will see him dead he will die, therefore it says acharei mot- after the death.

Tazria -

My Musing
This midrash is a rarity in that it is a continuation from a midrash yelamdeinu in the next sidra, Metzora ( Tanhuma 4). It reverses the order of the three types of tza’raat as they are encountered in Leviticus. The verses in this sidra introduce the tzara’at of the body followed by that of the clothes. In Metzora, tzara'at of the house is discussed. The order presented in this week's selection is house, clothes, and body. The midrash posits that the punishment is in fact a difficulty for God to inflict. The Midrash uses the inverted order to explain that the negaim, lesions, of the house and clothes are first and second chances for repentance. It is only after the second chance that the third negah gets put to use.

When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it become in the skin of his flesh the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests.
It is difficult before the Holy One, blessed be He, to punish a person. And what does He do? He first warns him and then hits him. As it says, “When ye are come into the land of Canaan, which I give to you for a possession, and I put the plague of leprosy in a house of the land of your possession;” In the beginning He strikes the house. If he returns from his ways, that is fine, and if not, he is stricken in his clothes. As it says, “And when the plague of leprosy is in a garment, whether it be a woolen garment, or a linen garment;” If he returns from his ways, that is fine, and if not, they come to his body as it says, “When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh”

Shemini

My Musing
On the last day of the initiation of the kohanim to the divine service of the Mishkan, Moses tells them to offer a calf?! Even a shofar is not allowed to be from a bull or calf, because it is too reminiscent of the Golden Calf. Yet here at the inauguration of the sanctuary 2 calves are offered. The Midrash opines that it is to show that we are no tainted by the past sin. Don’t be afraid of blemishes in your past, use them to grow.

“(And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;) and he said unto Aaron: 'Take thee a bull-calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before the LORD. And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering;”
“and he said unto Aaron: 'Take thee a bull-calf”, and why didn’t he say a bull rather than a calf? Because of a calf he lost the priesthood and through a calf the priesthood will be established in your hands. And not only that but alos that Israel should not be able to say that they stil have iniquities from the action of the calf, therefore said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘They will also offer a calf.’
“And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf” That all should know that they atoned for the act of the calf. Said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘In this world, you will atone through a sacrifice, and in the world to come, I will forgive your sins without a sacrifice” As it says, “ I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for Mine own sake; and thy sins I will not remember.”

vayikra ויקרא

My Musing
This midrash continues from an earlier “Yelamdeinu” teaching laws pertaining to the reading. But there are two lessons contained within. One- that the fruits can bring honor to the tree- so that parents are the beneficiaries of the honor betwoed upon their children. Two- that the effort exerted by the poor to offer sacrifices equates the offering as if the finest animal was offered.

And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay wood in order upon the fire.

All the trees are acceptable for the fire pile on the altar, except the wood of the vine and olive wood. Why? Because they make praiseworthy fruit. This teaches that the merit of the children honors the parents.

“And when any soul brings a meal-offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon.” It does not refer to the one offering the sacrifice as “soul” [nefesh] in all the sacrifices except with regard to the gift offering of the indigent. Said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘I consider it as if he sacrificed his soul”

“And if thy offering be a meal-offering baked on a griddle, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil.” And another scripture says, “And if thy offering be a meal-offering of the stewing-pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.” What is the difference between the griddle and stewing pan?
The stewing pan has a cover and the griddle does not.
The stewing pan is deep and the food is soft, the griddle is flat and the food is hard.

The meal offering of the Kohen Gadol – the kneading and assembly was done inside and pushes off the Shabbat. The grinding and grating does not push off the Shabbat. All the meal offerings are from matzah, except the leavened bread of the thanks offering and the shew loaves. All the meal offerings are kneaded with lukewarm water and are guarded to prevent rising. And if the remains become leavened, that transgresses the negative rule, No meal-offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven; for ye shall make no leaven, nor any honey, smoke as an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

My Musing
What does it mean to be appreciative? What does it mean to be repentant?
The midrash links the two.

If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour soaked.

Behold how the Holy One, blessed be He, forgives the iniquities of Israel. Behold, what did they offer to the Holy One, blesses be He:” then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving” Rather, said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘Whoever has a bull should bring a bull, and whomever has a ram should bring a ram, and whomever has a sheep should bring a sheep, and whomever has a dove should bring a dove, and whoever does not possess those should bring flour. And whoever, does not possess even flour, and has nothing, should bring words.’ As it says, “Take with you words, and return unto the LORD; say unto Him: 'Forgive all iniquity, and accept that which is good; so will we render for bullocks the offering of our lips” and say that it is accepted. Said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘that is “we render for bullocks the offering of our lips”’ Why? Because there is not a more genuine repentance before the Holy One, blessed be He than sincere appreciation and gratitude. Therefore it says, “If he offer it for a thanksgiving”
