My Musing
In honor of Pesach I offer just a short midrash on the plague of darkness. The plague of darkness lends itself to the midrash as the verses in the scripture are very complete, yet there always seems to be more to understand.

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת בא סימן ג
(שמות פרק י:כב) "וַיֵּט מֹשֶׁה אֶת יָדוֹ עַל הַשָּׁמָיִם וַיְהִי חֹשֶׁךְ אֲפֵלָה בְּכָל אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים"
אמרו זכרונם לברכה: שבעה ימים של חשך היו. כיצד?

"And Moshe stretched out his hand on (to) the sky and behold there was darkness, enveloping fog in all the land of Egypt three days"
The midrash states that there were seven days of darkness although the verse states three. The midrash asks how can this be deduced?

שלשה ימים הראשונים מי שהיה יושב ובקש לעמוד עומד, והעומד שבקש לישב יושב.
שלשה ימים האחרונים כל מי שהיה יושב לא היה יכול לעמוד והעומד אינו יכול לישב ומי שהוא רבוץ לא היה יכול לזקוף. מנין?

The first three days whoever was sitting could stand and whoever was standing could sit. The last three days one who was sitting could not stand and one who was standing could not sit and one who was bent over could not straighten up. The midrash asks from where do we see this in the text?

שכן כתיב (שמות פרק י:כג) "לֹא רָאוּ אִישׁ אֶת אָחִיו וְלֹא קָמוּ אִישׁ מִתַּחְתָּיו שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים וּלְכָל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה אוֹר בְּמוֹשְׁבֹתָם"
"לֹא רָאוּ אִישׁ אֶת אָחִיו" הרי שלשה.
" וְלֹא קָמוּ אִישׁ מִתַּחְתָּיו שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים" הרי ששה.
ואי זה הוא יום השביעי?
(שמות פרק יד:כ) " וַיָּבֹא בֵּין מַחֲנֵה מִצְרַיִם וּבֵין מַחֲנֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיְהִי הֶעָנָן וְהַחֹשֶׁךְ וַיָּאֶר אֶת הַלָּיְלָה וְלֹא קָרַב זֶה אֶל זֶה כָּל הַלָּיְלָה"
"וַיְהִי הֶעָנָן וְהַחֹשֶׁךְ וַיָּאֶר" ויאר זה יום של ים.

As it is written "a person did not see his brother and one did not stand from under him three days and for all of Israel there was light in their dwelling."
The midrash proceeds to extrapolate from this verse.
"a person did not see his brother" is the first three days
" a person did not stand from under him" is the next three equaling six.
What is the seventh day? That is from a different verse and relates to the cloud that protected the Israelites

וכן במצרים הענן מאיר לישראל ומחשיך למצרים שנאמר "לֹא רָאוּ"
" וּלְכָל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה אוֹר בְּמוֹשְׁבֹתָם" והיה מאיר לישראל ומראה להן כל כלי כסף וזהב ושמלות וכל טוב מצרים. ומה שבתיבות ובחביות ובמטמוניות היה מראה להן והיו שואלין ונותנין להן בעל כרחן שהיו אומרים להם ישראל הרי לך במקום פלוני כלי כך וכך, הוי ויהי חושך אפלה.

And this is what was in Egypt, the cloud would light the area for the Israelites but cause darkness for the Egyptians. The cloud would light uop thee areas where the Egyptians had their gems, money and jewelry. When it came time to leave the Israelites had the knowledge necessary to discern if the Egyptians were being truthful when the Israelites asked before they were to leave.
