Is Torah a burden or a device for self –refinement?
We can predict the Midrash’s answer. The Torah can be viewed as a cattle prod forcing us to move a certain way, or it can be viewed as tool towards developing a sense of self and a maturity that will be
emancipating.

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת וילך סימן א
(דברים לא:א) "וַיֵּלֶךְ מֹשֶׁה וַיְדַבֵּר אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֶל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל"

"And Moses went and spoke these words unto all Israel."

אין "וַיֵּלֶךְ" אלא לשון תוכחה שנאמר, (תהלים מו:ט) "לְכוּ חֲזוּ מִפְעֲלוֹת יְדֹוָד, אֲשֶׁר שָׂם שַׁמּוֹת בָּאָרֶץ"
בסוף קהלת כתיב (קהלת יב:יא) "דִּבְרֵי חֲכָמִים כַּדָּרְבֹנוֹת וּכְמַשְׂמְרוֹת נְטוּעִים בַּעֲלֵי אֲסֻפּוֹת נִתְּנוּ מֵרֹעֶה אֶחָד"

There is no use of the word "And he went" but for rebuke, as it says, " Come, behold the works of the LORD, who hath made desolations in the earth." At the end of Ecclesiastes it is written, " The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails well fastened are those that are composed in collections; they are given from one shepherd."

מה "כַּדָּרְבֹנוֹת" [דרבן]? זה מכוון את הפרה לתלמיה, אף דברי תורה מכוונות לב לומדיהון לדרך טובה." וּכְמַשְׂמְרוֹת [וכמסמרות] נְטוּעִים"-מה מסמר זה קבוע, אף דברי תורה קבועים. ומה נטיעה פרה ורבה? אף דברי תורה פרין ורבין למצוא בהם טעם. "נִתְּנוּ מֵרֹעֶה אֶחָד", אף על פי שהללו מטמאין והללו מטהרין, הללו אוסרין והללו מתירין, כולן אמרן משה מפי הגבורה.

What is the meaning of " are as goads". This directs the cattle to its path, so the Torah guides the hearts of its students to the right path. " as nails well fastened (planted)"- what is the character of a nail that it is set, the words of the Torah are set. And what is the character of being 'planted' that it reproduces, the words of the Torah reproduce and find meaning. " they are given from one shepherd.", even though these laws declare impurity and purity, they declare an item to be forbidden or permitted, all were given to Moshe from the Exalted One.

" וּכְמַשְׂמְרוֹת נְטוּעִים" כתוב בשי"ן לומר שיש בתורה כ"ד ספרים כמנין משמרות שהעמיד דוד; לכך נכתב בשי"ן. וכן בדברי הימים נכתב 'דויד' מלא, שהוא בגימטריא ארבע ועשרים כנגד ארבע ועשרים משמרות שהעמיד דוד.

. " as nails well fastened (planted)" is written with the letter shin and not the samech as the word is usually written, to imply there are 24 books in the Bible according to the number of shifts that David established therefore it is written with the letter shin. And similarly in Chronicles, David is written full, with the letter yud that raises the numerical value of the name to 24, contrasting to the 24 shifts that David established.
