This week I chose a midrash from the second of the double parshiot read this Shabbat, Kedoshim, that deals with coming to the land and realizing God’s blessing as intended for Adam and delayed until the Israelites inhabit the land and follow the Torah. In honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut which was celebrated this week I present this midrash:

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת קדושים סימן ז
(ויקרא יט:כג) "וְכִי תָבֹאוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ וּנְטַעְתֶּם כָּל עֵץ מַאֲכָל וַעֲרַלְתֶּם עָרְלָתוֹ אֶת פִּרְיוֹ, שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים יִהְיֶה לָכֶם עֲרֵלִים לֹא יֵאָכֵל"
(ויקרא יט:כג) "וְכִי תָבֹאוּ אֶל הָאָרֶץ וּנְטַעְתֶּם כָּל עֵץ מַאֲכָל וַעֲרַלְתֶּם עָרְלָתוֹ אֶת פִּרְיוֹ, שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים יִהְיֶה לָכֶם עֲרֵלִים לֹא יֵאָכֵל"
And when you will come into the land, and you will plant trees for food, and you will count the fruit as forbidden; three years it will be forbidden to you; it shall not be eaten.
זה שאמר הכתוב (זכריה ח:יא-יב) "וְעַתָּה לֹא כַיָּמִים הָרִאשֹׁנִים אֲנִי לִשְׁאֵרִית הָעָם הַזֶּה נְאֻם יְדֹוָד צְבָאוֹת. כִּי זֶרַע הַשָּׁלוֹם הַגֶּפֶן תִּתֵּן פִּרְיָהּ וְהָאָרֶץ תִּתֵּן אֶת יְבוּלָהּ וְהַשָּׁמַיִם יִתְּנוּ טַלָּם וְהִנְחַלְתִּי אֶת שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם הַזֶּה אֶת כָּל אֵלֶּה"
“And now I will not be like the fist days to the remnant of the nation, said the Lord of hosts. Like the seed of peace, the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to inherit all these things.
מהו "וְעַתָּה לֹא כַיָּמִים הָרִאשֹׁנִים אֲנִי"?
What is the meaning of “And now I will not be like the first days”?
כיון שישראל יצאו ממצרים והיו מהלכין במדבר הוריד להם הקדוש ברוך הוא את המן, והגיז להם את השלו, והעלה להם את הבאר, והיה כל שבט ושבט עושה לו אמת המים ומכניס אצלו. והיה נוטע בו תאנים ורמונים ועושין פירות בן יומן כשם שהיה מתחלת ברייתו של עולם; (בראשית א:יא) "וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹקִים, תַּדְשֵׁא הָאָרֶץ דֶּשֶׁא, עֵשֶׂב מַזְרִיעַ זֶרַע עֵץ פְּרִי עֹשֶׂה פְּרִי לְמִינוֹ אֲשֶׁר זַרְעוֹ בוֹ עַל הָאָרֶץ וַיְהִי כֵן"
Since Israel left Egypt and were travelling the wilderness The Holy One, blessed be He, brought down the manna down to them, swarmed the quail to them, and raised the well, and each tribe would make a standardized measure of water and bring it inside. And they would plant figs and pomegranates and the fruit would blossom that day just as when the world was created; And God said: 'Let the land put forth grass, herb yielding seed, and fruit-tree bearing fruit after its kind, wherein is the seed thereof, upon the earth.' And it was so”
חטא אדם, זורעין חטים וצומח קוץ ודרדר. משנסתלק הבאר מה כתיב שם (במדבר כ:ה) "וְלָמָה הֶעֱלִיתֻנוּ מִמִּצְרַיִם לְהָבִיא אֹתָנוּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם הָרָע הַזֶּה לֹא מְקוֹם זֶרַע וּתְאֵנָה וְגֶפֶן וְרִמּוֹן וּמַיִם אַיִן לִשְׁתּוֹת"
כל כך! למה "וּמַיִם אַיִן לִשְׁתּוֹת"?
Adam sinned and now has to sow the wheat and the thistles grow. When the well dried what is written there, “And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? It is no place of seed, or figs, or vines, or pomegranates; nor is there any water to drink.”
So much! And what is meant by “nor is there any water to drink.”?
אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה, אמר להם לישראל כשתכנסו לארץ אני מחזיר לכם את כל הטובה שנאמר, (דברים ח:ז-ט) "כִּי יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקֶיךָ מְבִיאֲךָ אֶל אֶרֶץ טוֹבָה אֶרֶץ נַחֲלֵי מָיִם עֲיָנֹת וּתְהֹמֹת יֹצְאִים בַּבִּקְעָה וּבָהָר. אֶרֶץ חִטָּה וּשְׂעֹרָה וְגֶפֶן וּתְאֵנָה וְרִמּוֹן אֶרֶץ זֵית שֶׁמֶן וּדְבָשׁ. אֶרֶץ אֲשֶׁר לֹא בְמִסְכֵּנֻת תֹּאכַל בָּהּ לֶחֶם לֹא תֶחְסַר כֹּל בָּהּ אֶרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אֲבָנֶיהָ בַרְזֶל וּמֵהֲרָרֶיהָ תַּחְצֹב נְחֹשֶׁת"
The Holy One blessed be He said to Moshe’ say to Israel that when they will enter the land I will return to you all the good as it says “For the Lord your God will bring you to a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey; a land where you will eat bread without scarceness, not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you will mine copper.”
כיון שבאו לארץ התחילו חוטאין שנאמר (ירמיהו ב:ז) "וָאָבִיא אֶתְכֶם אֶל אֶרֶץ הַכַּרְמֶל לֶאֱכֹל פִּרְיָהּ וְטוּבָהּ וַתָּבֹאוּ וַתְּטַמְּאוּ אֶת אַרְצִי וְנַחֲלָתִי שַׂמְתֶּם לְתוֹעֵבָה" היתה עושה פירות כראוי; היו זורעין חטים הרבה וקוצרים מעט לפי שבטלו הבכורים אבל לעתיד אין הקדוש ברוך הוא עושה כן, שנאמר "וְעַתָּה לֹא כַיָּמִים הָרִאשֹׁנִים אֲנִי לִשְׁאֵרִית הָעָם הַזֶּה נְאֻם יְדֹוָד צְבָאוֹת"
Since when they arrived in the land they began to sin as it says “And I brought you into a land of fruitful fields, to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled My land, and made My heritage an abomination.” It used to give fruit as it was intended. They would sow much wheat and harvest little because they dispensed with the first fruits. But in the future the Holy One blessed be He, will not do this as it says, “And now I will not be like the fist days to the remnant of the nation”
ונאמר (זכריה ח:יב) "כִּי זֶרַע הַשָּׁלוֹם הַגֶּפֶן תִּתֵּן פִּרְיָהּ וְהָאָרֶץ תִּתֵּן אֶת יְבוּלָהּ וְהַשָּׁמַיִם יִתְּנוּ טַלָּם וְהִנְחַלְתִּי אֶת שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם הַזֶּה אֶת כָּל אֵלֶּה"
“Like the seed of peace, the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to inherit all these things.”
