בא BO

My Musing
What does it mean to be in the dark? When I was young it meant to be clueless. But nowadays, my students express the fear and cold of being alone and lost with no way out. Perhaps this youthful interpretation is more in line with the midrash.
The midrash is perplexed by the concept of the darkness that was palpable. While clearly divine, the midrash entertains two opinions as to the origin of this divine darkness. It is either heavenly or from hell.
Either way the most intriguing characteristic of the darkness was its thickness. While totally enveloping and palpable, it was only as thick as a very common coin.

And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Stretch out thy hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.'

From where was this darkness?
Rabbi Judah and Rabbi Nechemia. Rabbi Judah said it came from the upper darkness as it says " He made darkness His hiding-place, His pavilion round about Him; darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies." Rabbi Nechemia said it came from the darkness of Hell. As it says, "A land of thick darkness, as darkness itself; a land of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness."

Said Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi, three instances we have heard that a man makes sure his Teaching is heard by his students near his death. From where is this known? As it says, That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou might bring back words of truth to them that send thee? And similarly Solomon said, " The end of the matter, all having been heard: fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole man"
And here, " a land of the shadow of death, without any order". Since a man tilts towards the shadow of death he arranges his study, as it says, " a land of the shadow of death, without any order". Rabbi Tanhuma says, since he comes to take away, the ministering angels say, 'give strength to God' that is ""A land of thick darkness, as darkness itself"
Woe unto the person who has a house where the windows open to the darkness and are enveloped by darkness. Its light comes from dark. And thus he says, "Thus saith the Lord GOD: In the day when he went down to the nether-world I caused the deep to mourn and cover itself for him, and I restrained the rivers thereof, and the great waters were stayed; and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him."

Rabbi Judah the son of Rebbe said, with what do the evil people cover themselves in hell? In darkness. Chizkiah the son of Rabbi Judah said, This pot, with what is it covered? With a clay utensil like it and in it. Just as it is made from clay, it is covered with a clay utensil, such are the evil ones. "Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say: 'Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?"

Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, covers them with the depths that are darkness as it says, "Now the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters." That is "gehinom". That is the darkness that enveloped the Egyptians, it was from hell. And they could touch the dark, how much was there of the dark? The Rabbis of blessed memory said, it was as thick as a dinar.

Va'eira

What is the message inherent in the staff of Moshe becoming a snake in last week's Reading? It matters greatly in this week's study.
If we look at the end of this week's selection of the Midrash Tanhuma, it explains that the staff that was a snake, and will again be a snake, is a symbol for Moshe to understand that Pharoah is as crooked as a snake
Then the opening to the midrash makes more sense. The teaching empowers us to understand what it truly means to be in the company of God. If you were truly appreciative of the magnitude of God, you would never leave your amidah prayer.

'When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying: Show a wonder for you; then thou shalt say unto Aaron: Take thy rod, and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it become a serpent.'

Our master should instruct:
If one stood to pray (the standing devotion) and a snake came and bit him, should he stop?
This is how our rabbis taught: One who is standing at prayer, even if the king should inquire of him he should not respond, even if a snake was coiled to strike his heel, he should not interrupt.

It happened that Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa was praying. A wild mule came and bit him and his students fled. After a moment they came and saw the mule dead, laid out near its burrow. They said, woe unto the person bit by a wild mule, woe unto the wild mule who injures Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa.

And what did the rabbis hope to achieve by associating the folds of a snake with the kingdom of Egypt?
Said Rabbi Joshua ben Pazi, as it is written, "The sound thereof shall go like the serpent's; for they march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood"
The snake slithers quietly and kills, so the kingdom of Egypt sneaks quietly and kills. Even one in jail is snuck up upon and killed.

Another idea: What did they see in associating the kingdom of Egypt to a snake? The snake is always crooked, so does the kingdom of Egypt make the roads crooked. Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moshe, just like a snake is crooked, so will Pharaoh be crooked. And when he comes to be crooked, you will say to Aaron, "take my staff" he will hold the staff in opposition.

That is to say, with this you will be struck. " Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done; saying: 'My counsel shall stand, and all My pleasure will I do'"
Until Moshe was shown at the burning bush by the Holy One, blessed be He, how Pharaoh was going to be crooked. Therefore He made his staff from the snake. That is, just like the snake is crooked, so is pharaoh.

Shemot

"And these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; every man came with his household

Another idea: "And these are the names", this is what scripture said "Like your name, God, so is your praise, unto the ends of the earth, Thy right hand is full of righteousness."
A king of flesh and blood is praised for his courage and he is weak, is praised for his beauty and he is ugly, is praised for his mercy and he is cruel. And the Holy One, blessed be He, in all that He is praised he is more; The God, the Great, the Hero, and the Awesome.

David said, "Who can express the mighty acts of the LORD, or make all His praise to be heard?"
Iyov said, "Shall it be told Him that I would speak? Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up?"
Came the Men of the Great Assembly and said, "Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said: 'Stand up and bless the LORD your God from everlasting to everlasting; and let them say: Blessed be Thy glorious Name, that is exalted above all blessing and praise.

Said Rabbi Yosi bar Chanina: There are those who names are pleasant and their actions are ugly, there are those whose names are ugly and their actions are pleasant. And there are those whose names and actions are unpleasant; and there are those whose names and actions are pleasant.

"And these are the names", said Rabbi Abahu, every place that 'these' is mentioned it invalidates the previous group. And every place that "And these" is mentioned adds to the earlier generation. "These are the generations of the heaven and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven." He nullified the first with the unformed and void. And exempted all of them. And even here, "And these are the names" added praise to the first.

Vayechi

My Musing
What does it mean "your time is up"? From the seemingly innocuous word, 'Vayikrevu' which means and they neared, the rabbis drew two very solemn inferences. The word is the beginning of a phrase that it was time for the protagonist to die. Today's selection teaches that there is no power over the time of death. Not only (as many people say) is death inevitable (or certain like taxes) it is also not in our control. The second is a teaching that is an interesting commentary about even the slightest ambition. The use of the word implies to us that the protagonist did not live as long as their father, despite being more accomplished. We can look at this last teaching humbly, such that even the most accomplished of our patriarchs did not live as long as their fathers, or we can look and say that length of days is not necessarily the indicator of success, it is what we do with our time that is important.

And the days of Israel neared that he would die; and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him: 'If now I have found favor in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt.

This is what the scripture says, "There is no man that hath power over the wind to retain the wind; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it."

Said Rabbi Yehoshua of Sichnin in the name of Rabbi Levi: The coronets that Moshe made in the wilderness, when the time came for him to due, the Holy One, blessed be He, hid them so that no
other man would blow them. And they demonstrate that " there is no power after death"
Another application; "and there is no power over the day of death", when Zimri committed
his heinous act, what is written there? "And he went after the man of Israel into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel"

And where was Moshe? And was not Pinchas speaking (ruling) in fornt of Moshe! Rather, to fulfill what it says, "there us no power in the day of death", and there is no death except to understand as downfall. The salvation was given to Pinchas, and Moshe lowered himself.
And even David, it is written about him, "Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he could get no heat" Since he was tilting towards death "Now the days of David drew near that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying: 'I go the way of all the earth; be thou strong therefore, and show thyself a man"

And even Yaakov, when he was tilting towards death, began to lower himself before Joseph as it says, 'If now I have found favor in thy sight" When? As he neared death. As it says, " And the days of Israel neared that he would die"
Said Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish (Reish Lakish): Said to him The Holy One, blessed be He, 'by your life! You will be buried but you will not die'
"And they (the days) neared", what is "And they (the days) neared"? Said The Holy One, blessed be He, 'today accept upon you because that is the fulfillment, like a person who says, so and so came near to his friend'

"And they (the days) neared", said our rabbis of blessed memory, anyone who it is said about them that they approached the time to die, did not achieve the length of days of their father. "Approaching" is written about David as it says, "Now the days of David drew near that he should die;", he did not achieve the days of his forefathers, Boaz, Obed, and Jesse. And our rabbis said that Obed lived over 400 years, and David lived only seventy. He did not achieve the days of his forefathers, therefore it says ""And they (the days) neared"

Amram lived 137 years and Moshe only lived 120. Therefore it says about him (Moshe) And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Behold, thy days approach that thou must die; call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may give him a charge.' And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tent of meeting"
Yaakov, it is written about him, "approaching" that he did not achieve the days of his fathers, Abraham lived 175, Isaac lived 180, and Yaakov, only 147, therefore it says about him "And the days of Israel neared that he would die"

Vayigash

My Musing
One of my favorite midrashim in the Breishit rabbah, teaches that Abraham was only created to bring Jacob into this world. For me this has always meant that the key to Jewish survival is transmittal of the Torah to the generation beyond- that we should not be content with just teaching our children but guaranteeing that our grandchildren will be loyal to the Torah and the Jewish people.
This week's selection takes us on a tangential discussion of what it means to guarantee, implicitly asking where did Judah get the wherewithal to approach the viceroy of Egypt to save Binyamin, (when none of the brothers intervened for Shimon) and answering us with our implied question.
The word of guarantor, Arev, comes from the same root as the verb to mix. When we guarantee, we do not simply promise to help out, we become inextricably entwined with the other party to the deal. It becomes part of us. That is the source of strength whereby Judah can approach the viceroy, Joseph, to save Binyamin, it is also the source of our strength as we stand together and gives us the strength to make sure that our tradition and the Torah remains paramount in our children.

"And Judah approached him, and said: 'O' my lord, please let your servant, speak a word in my lord's ears, and not be angry with your servant; for you are as Pharaoh"

"And Judah approached him" This is what the scripture said "My son, if you pledged surety for your friend, you have shaken hands with a stranger"
When the Holy One, blessed be He, wanted to give the Torah to Israel, He said to them, 'accept my Teaching'
They said to Him, 'yes'
He said to them, 'Give me a guarantee that you will fulfill it'
They said to Him, 'Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will be our guarantors'
He said to them, 'Your forefathers themselves needed guarantors'

Abraham said, "And he said: 'Lord God, with what will I know that I shall inherit it?'"
Isaac loved my enemies, as it is written, "But Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness."
Jacob said, "Why do you say, Jacob, and speak Israel: 'My path is hidden from the Lord, and from God my sentence is passed over'?"

They said to Him, 'Our children will be our guarantors!'
Immediately the Holy One, blessed be He, accepted them and gave the Torah to Israel. As it says, "Out of the mouth of babes and nursing babies, You have found strength, because of Your adversaries; that You put to rest the enemy and the avenger."

Therefore, when Israel wastes the Torah, the Holy One, blessed be He, collects from the guarantors. As it says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you are disgusted by knowledge, I will also be disgusted that you will not be a priest to Me; And you have forgotten the teaching of thy God, I also will forget thy children"
What is the meaning of "I also"? Said the Holy One blessed be He, Even I am pained by them that I cause them loss, that they recite daily Blessed be The Lord who is blessed for ever and ever"
That is "My son, if you pledged surety for your friend," So with Judah who was the guarantor of Binyamin. Therefore not one from all the tribes stood opposite Joseph, except for Judah as it says, "And Judah approached him,"

and God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release unto you your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.'

Our master should instruct: What is the upper limit of the prayers a person should pray every day?
This is what our masters taught: Do not pray more than the three prayers that were instituted by the patriarchs of the world.

Abraham instituted the morning prayer as it says, "And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord" and there is standing in the Bible except indicating prayer as it says, "Then stood up Phinehas, and wrought judgment, and so the plague was stayed."

Isaac instituted the afternoon prayer. As it says, And Isaac went out to converse in the field at the eventide; and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, there were camels coming." And there is no conversation except prayer as it says, "A Prayer of the afflicted, when he faints, and before the Lord he pours out his conversation."

Jacob instituted the evening prayer. As it says, "And he engaged upon the place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep" And there is no engagement except for prayer as it says, "Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to Me; for I will not hear thee"

And even Daniel wrote about prayer: "And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house--now his windows were open in his upper chamber toward Jerusalem--and he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime." But he did not specify the time.

David arose and explicated "Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I complain, and moan; and He hath heard my voice." Therefore a person is not permitted to pray more than three times a day. And Rabbi Yochanan said if only a person would pray all day.

Antonius asked our the holy rabbi, Why do you not pray every hour?
He replied, it is forbidden.
He asked, why?
Rabbi Yehudah answered, to prevent levity when dealing with the Mighty.
He (Antonius) did not accept that answer. What did the Holy Rabbi do?
He got up next to him and said to him, "good day"
After an hour, he (Rabbi Yehudah) to him, Peace unto you, king.
He (Antonius) said to him, why do you belittle the kingdom?
He replied, your ears should hear what you say. And what are you, flesh and blodd, one who asks to your welfare every hour you determine to be belittling, the King of Kings, how much more so?! That one should not be a burden every hour.

Rabbi Yose ben Halafta said, there are time for prayer. As it says, "But as for me, let my prayer be unto You, Lord, in an desirable time; God, in the abundance of Thy mercy, answer me with the truth of Thy salvation" When is the desirable time?
When the congregation is praying. Therefore a person whould rise to prayer, because there is nothing greater than prayer.
Know that it was decried on Moses that he would not enter the Land nor see the land. And on the basis that he increased in prayer, it says of him, "And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land, even Gilead as far as Dan"
And similarly Chizkiyahu the king prayed and the decree was annulled. And thus Jacob, when he sent his sons to Egypt, he prayed for them as it says " and God Almighty give you mercy"

My Musing
What dies it mean to be trustworthy? How can you prove that you are worthy of the title? The proof is in your actions when no one is looking. The proof is when you resist temptation when there is no one to impress. The midrash relates three examples of people who might be inclined to cheat or fall victim to their desires because there is no police force to enforce ethical behavior.

"And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said: 'Lie with me.'"

Our master should teach us: Who is the great among the reliable ones? Thus taught our rabbis, three reliable ones are:
The master of the house who separates the tithes accordingly and is not suspect on malfeasance with regard to the offerings and tithes, there is no one more reliable than that person.
The indigent person who was given the object as collateral and is not suspect that he will use it for personal gain, there is no one more reliable than that person.
And a bachelor who dwells in town in the neighborhood frequented by ladies of the evening and does not sin, there is no one more reliable than he.

You do not find a person more reliable than Joseph who was in Egypt that scripture relates to him " And she doted upon their concubines, whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys, and whose stream is like the stream of horses". Joseph was 17 years old and was not suspect about sexual morass in the extreme. That his master's wife is home with him, and she would try him daily with many different tasks. She would change clothes three times every day. The outfit she wore at morning she would not wear at midday, and that which was worn at midday was not worn in the evening. Why so much effort? So that he would notice her.

Said the rabbis: One time he Egyptian ladies gathered and came to see the beauty of Joseph. What did Potiphar's wife do? She gave each a citron and each one a knife and called to Joseph and stood him in front of them. Since they were so focused on staring at his beauty they were cutting their hands. She (Potiphar's wife) said to them, and you who are only here an hour are so affected, I who see him at every hour, how much more so am I affected. And each day she tried to ply him with words and stood in the way of his inclination and stood there with him in his need, from where, from the phrase " that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph"
