The Midrash entertains a potential contradiction between verse from Isaiah and Psalms about approaching God. Isaiah says, as we read on fast days, to approach when God is close, David in Psalms says to approach God at all times.
More than simply saying that each individual has a unique way to approach God, the midrash is trying to teach that how we approach God is dependent on our life story.

I hope to post the second part of the midrash in time for Yom Kippur

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת האזינו סימן ד
(דברים לב:ד) "הַצּוּר תָּמִים פָּעֳלו,ֹ כִּי כָל דְּרָכָיו מִשְׁפָּט, אֵ-ל אֱמוּנָה וְאֵין עָוֶל, צַדִּיק וְיָשָׁר הוּא"

The Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice; a God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is He.

ישעיה אמר (ישעיהו נה:ו) "דִּרְשׁוּ יְדֹוָד בְּהִמָּצְאוֹ קְרָאֻהוּ בִּהְיוֹתוֹ קָרוֹב"

Isaiah said “Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near”

ודוד (דברי הימים א,טז:יא) דִּרְשׁוּ יְדֹוָד וְעֻזּוֹ בַּקְּשׁוּ פָנָיו תָּמִיד"

Seek ye the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually.

למה אמר "בַּקְּשׁוּ פָנָיו תָּמִיד"?
ללמדך שהקדוש ברוך הוא, יתברך שמו, פעמים נראה ופעמים אינו נראה, פעמים שומע ופעמים אינו רוצה לשמוע. פעמים עונה ופעמים אינו עונה, פעמים נדרש ופעמים אינו נדרש, פעמים מצוי ופעמים אינו מצוי, פעמים קרוב ופעמים אינו קרוב.

Why did he say “seek His face continually”?
To teach you that the Holy One, blessed be He, blessed be His name, at times appears and at times does not appear. At times hears and at times does not want to hear. At times answers and at times Does not answer. At times is sought out and at times is not sought out. At times He is found and at times He is not, at times He is close and at times He is not close.

כיצד נראה למשה? שנאמר (שמות לג:יא) "וְדִבֶּר יְדֹוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים כַּאֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר אִישׁ אֶל רֵעֵהוּ וְשָׁב אֶל הַמַּחֲנֶה וּמְשָׁרְתוֹ יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן נוּן נַעַר לֹא יָמִישׁ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֹהֶל" חזר ונעלם ממנו כשאמר לו (שמות לג:יח) "וַיֹּאמַר הַרְאֵנִי נָא אֶת כְּבֹדֶךָ"

How did He appear to Moshe? As it says, “And the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return into the camp; but his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the Tent.”

וכן נראה לישראל בסיני שנאמר (שמות כד:י) "וַיִּרְאוּ אֵת אֱלֹקֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְתַחַת רַגְלָיו כְּמַעֲשֵׂה לִבְנַת הַסַּפִּיר וּכְעֶצֶם הַשָּׁמַיִם לָטֹהַר"
ואומר (שמות כד:יז) "וּמַרְאֵה כְּבוֹד יְדֹוָד, כְּאֵשׁ אֹכֶלֶת בְּרֹאשׁ הָהָר, לְעֵינֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל"

And so He appeared to the Israelites, as it says, and they saw the God of Israel; and there was under His feet the like of a paved work of sapphire stone, and the like of the very heaven for clearness.” And it says “And the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.

חזר ונעלם מהם שנאמר (דברים ד:טו)"וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם מְאֹד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם כִּי לֹא רְאִיתֶם כָּל תְּמוּנָה בְּיוֹם דִּבֶּר יְדֹוָד אֲלֵיכֶם בְּחֹרֵב מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ"
ואומר(דברים ד:יב) "וַיְדַבֵּר יְדֹוָד אֲלֵיכֶם מִתּוֹךְ הָאֵשׁ קוֹל דְּבָרִים אַתֶּם שֹׁמְעִים וּתְמוּנָה אֵינְכֶם רֹאִים זוּלָתִי קוֹל"
וכשהיו ישראל במצרים בשעבוד פרך (שמות ב:כד) "וַיִּשְׁמַע אֱלֹקִים אֶת נַאֲקָתָם וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹקִים אֶת בְּרִיתוֹ אֶת אַבְרָהָם אֶת יִצְחָק וְאֶת יַעֲקֹב"

He returned and disappeared from them as it says, “Therefore take good heed unto yourselves—because you saw no manner of form on the day that the Lord spoke unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire” and it says “And the Lord spoke unto you out of the midst of the fire; you heard the voice of words, but you saw no form; only a voice” And when the Israelites were in Egypt under hard labor “And the Lord spoke unto you out of the midst of the fire; you heard the voice of words, but you saw no form; only a voice”

כיון שחטאו (דברים א:מה) "וַתָּשֻׁבוּ וַתִּבְכּוּ לִפְנֵי יְדֹוָד וְלֹא שָׁמַע יְדֹוָד בְּקֹלְכֶם וְלֹא הֶאֱזִין אֲלֵיכֶם"

Once they sinned “And ye returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you.”

ענה לשמואל במצפה שנאמר (שמואל א, ז:ט) "וַיִּקַּח שְׁמוּאֵל טְלֵה חָלָב אֶחָד <ויעלה> וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ עוֹלָה כָּלִיל לַידֹוָד וַיִּזְעַק שְׁמוּאֵל אֶל יְדֹוָד בְּעַד יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּעֲנֵהוּ יְדֹוָד"
חזר ולא ענהו שנאמר (שמואל א,טז:א) "וַיֹּאמֶר יְדֹוָד אֶל שְׁמוּאֵל עַד מָתַי אַתָּה מִתְאַבֵּל אֶל שָׁאוּל וַאֲנִי מְאַסְתִּיו מִמְּלֹךְ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל מַלֵּא קַרְנְךָ שֶׁמֶן וְלֵךְ אֶשְׁלָחֲךָ אֶל יִשַׁי בֵּית הַלַּחְמִי כִּי רָאִיתִי בְּבָנָיו לִי מֶלֶךְ"

God answered Samuel in Mitzpeh as it says “And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt-offering unto the Lord; and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord answered him.”
Another time God did not answer him as it says, “And the Lord said unto Samuel: 'How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided Me a king among his sons.'”

ענה לדוד ואמר (תהלים לד:ה) "דָּרַשְׁתִּי אֶת יְדֹוָד וְעָנָנִי וּמִכָּל מְגוּרוֹתַי הִצִּילָנִי"
חזר ולא ענהו שנאמר (שמואל ב, יב:טז) "וַיְבַקֵּשׁ דָּוִד אֶת הָאֱלֹקִים בְּעַד הַנָּעַר וַיָּצָם דָּוִד צוֹם וּבָא וְלָן וְשָׁכַב אָרְצָה" דכתיב (שמואל ב, יב:יד) "אֶפֶס כִּי נִאֵץ נִאַצְתָּ אֶת אֹיְבֵי יְדֹוָד בַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה גַּם הַבֵּן הַיִּלּוֹד לְךָ מוֹת יָמוּת"

He answered David and said “I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears”
Again and David was not answered “David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and as often as he went in, he lay all night upon the earth.” As it is written “Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast greatly blasphemed the enemies of the Lord, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.'”

ובזמן שישראל עושין תשובה מצוי להם שנאמר (דברים ד:כט) "וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּם מִשָּׁם אֶת יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקֶיךָ וּמָצָאתָ כִּי תִדְרְשֶׁנּוּ בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשֶׁךָ"
ואם לא עשו תשובה (הושע ה:ו) "בְּצֹאנָם וּבִבְקָרָם יֵלְכוּ לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת יְדֹוָד וְלֹא יִמְצָאוּ חָלַץ מֵהֶם"

And when Israel repents God is found with them as it says “And you will seek the Lord your God from there, and you will find Him, if you search after Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
And if they do not repent “With their flocks and with their herds they will go to seek the Lord, but they will not find Him; He has drawn Himself away from them.”
