Taken as a stand alone midrash, this week's selection lacks context. But juxtaposed to the first midrash of the tanhuma collection of the parsha http://weeklytanhuma.blogspot.com/search?q=masei and it makes sense. Why recollect al the travels of the Israelites at this point? The midrash explains it as a lesson in appreciation. Too often we go along with our lives and do not take a moment to recollect how we have been provided for. Utilizing a seemingly difficult word in the text of tehilim, the midrash creates a mnemonic to help us recall that which the Holy One, blessed be He, did for us.

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת מסעי סימן ב
(במדבר לג:א) "אֵלֶּה מַסְעֵי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר יָצְאוּ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לְצִבְאֹתָם בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן"

"These are the travel stages of the children of Israel, by which they went forth out of the land of Egypt by their hosts under the hand of Moses and Aaron."

זה שאמר הכתוב (תהלים עז:כא) "נָחִיתָ כַצֹּאן עַמֶּךָ בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן"

This is what the Scripture said, "Thou lead Thy people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron."

מהו "נָחִיתָ"? לשון נוטריקון. רבי אליעזר אומר, 'נסים עשית להם: חיים נתת להם, ים סוף קרעת להם, תורה נתת להם ביד משה ואהרן.' רבי יהושע אומר, 'נפלאות עשית להם, חרות נתת להם, ימינך הושיע אותם, תלוי ראש נתת להם ביד משה ואהרן.' רבי עקיבא אומר, 'נוראות עשית בשונאיהם, חרון אף שלחת בהם ונלחמת בהם, תהומות כסית עליהם ביד משה ואהרן.' רבי אומר, 'נביאים העמדת מהם, חסידים העמדת מהם, ישרים העמדת מהם, תמימים העמדת מהם ביד משה ואהרן.'

What is the meaning of "lead" (nachita)? It is the language of mnemonics (nun, chet, yud, tav). Rabbi Eliezer says, "(nun) miracles (nisim) You did for them, (chet) Life (chayim) You gave them, (yud) the Reed Sea (yam) You split for them, (tav) Torah, You gave them through the aegis of Moshe and Aaron." Rabbi Joshua says, "Wonders (niflaot) You did for them, Freedom (cherut) You gave to them, Your right hand (yemin'cha) saved them, A leader (talu'I rosh) You gave them in the aegis of Moshe and Aaron." Rabbi Akiva says, "Awesome events (nora'ot) You did with their enemies, Anger (charon af) You imposed upon their enemies and fought them, the depths (tehomot) you covered them by the aegis of Moshe and Aaron." Rebbe says, "prophets (nevi'im) You stood before them, saints (Chasidim) You stood before them, people of integrity (yesharim) You stood before them, pure ones (temimim) You stood before them, by the aegis of Moshe and Aaron."

"כַצֹּאן" מהו? מה הצאן אין מכניסין אותן לצל הקורה, אף ישראל; כל זמן שהיו במדבר, לא נכנסו לצל הקורה ארבעים שנה. מה הצאן אין כונסין להם אוצרות אלא רועה במדבר, כך ישראל ארבעים שנה שהיו במדבר נזונו בלא אוצרות. ומה הצאן, כל מקום שהרועה מנהיגה היא נמשכת אחריו, כך ישראל, כל מקום שהיו משה ואהרן מסיעין אותם נוסעין אחריהם. שנאמר, "אֵלֶּה מַסְעֵי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל". לקיים מה שנאמר, "נָחִיתָ כַצֹּאן עַמֶּךָ בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן".

What is the meaning of "Sheep"? Just as one does not bring sheep into the 'shade of the beam' cold shadows, so it was with Israel; the entire time they were in the wilderness, they were not brought into the shade of the beam for forty years. Just as with sheep you do not bring them to the store-houses but graze them in the wilderness, similarly Israel were sustained forty years in the wilderness without storehouses. And also with sheep, every place he shepherd leads them they follow, similarly with Israel, everyplace where Moshe and Aaron would take them, they followed. As it says, " These are the travel stages of the children of Israel" to fulfill what was said, "Thou lead Thy people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron."
