This week’s selection must have been a clear favorite with the Medieval rabbinate. The message is clear- Torah will make a difference in the Jew. Whether we look at Torah as water or oil, the Israelite is different because of Torah.
Torah is the essential cog in the world. And since Israel’s task is to bring Torah to the world, Israel is special. Torah gives life to everything and Israel, due to its status, as the relayer of Torah gives life to the world. That raises Israel up and demands that it remain distinct so it can deliver the message of purity and holiness.

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת כי תבא סימן ג,
(דברים כח:א) "וְהָיָה אִם שָׁמוֹעַ תִּשְׁמַע בְּקוֹל יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹר לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת כָּל מִצְוֹתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם וּנְתָנְךָ יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקֶיךָ עֶלְיוֹן עַל כָּל גּוֹיֵי הָאָרֶץ"

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all His commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all the nations of the earth.

"וְהָיָה אִם שָׁמוֹעַ תִּשְׁמַע" זה שאמר הכתוב (שיר השירים א:ג) "לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים שֶׁמֶן תּוּרַק שְׁמֶךָ עַל כֵּן עֲלָמוֹת אֲהֵבוּךָ"
לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים"
אמר רבי ינאי ברבי שמעון, 'הראשונים, ריח מצות נתת להם, לבני נח שבע; עמד אברהם, נתת לו מילה, ליעקב אבר מן החי. כשעמדנו לפני הר סיני, נתת לנו מצות כאדם שמערה מפי חבית.

“And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently” This is what the scriptures said, “Thine oils have a goodly fragrance; thy name is as oil poured forth; therefore do the maidens love thee.”

Said Rabbi Yanai the son of Rabbi Shimon, The ancients, were given the frangrance of the commandments, the descendants of Noah were given seven, stood Abraham and You gave him the commandment of circumcision, to Jacob You gave the commandment of not eating the limb of a live animal. When they stood before You at mount Sinai, You gave us the commandments like a person emptying the barrel.

"שֶׁמֶן תּוּרַק שְׁמֶךָ"
מהו תּוּרַק? אמר רבי לוי בשם רבי שילא: מזדיין על מי שהיא עושה רצונו ואין לשון תורק אלא לשון זיין שנאמר, (בראשית יד:יד) "וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָם כִּי נִשְׁבָּה אָחִיו וַיָּרֶק אֶת חֲנִיכָיו יְלִידֵי בֵיתוֹ שְׁמֹנָה עָשָׂר וּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת וַיִּרְדֹּף עַד דָּן"

“Thy name is as oil poured forth”
What is ‘poured out’ Said Rabbi Levi in the name of Rabbi Shaila, equipped (armored) on what is the desire to do His will, ad there is no use of the lanuage of ‘poured out’ but equipped, as it says, “And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan.”

דבר אחר: "שֶׁמֶן תּוּרַק שְׁמֶךָ", נמשלה התורה לשמן ונמשלה למים. למים דכתיב (ישעיהו נה:א) "הוֹי כָּל צָמֵא לְכוּ לַמַּיִם וַאֲשֶׁר אֵין לוֹ כָּסֶף לְכוּ שִׁבְרוּ וֶאֱכֹלוּ וּלְכוּ שִׁבְרוּ בְּלוֹא כֶסֶף וּבְלוֹא מְחִיר יַיִן וְחָלָב" מה המים?

Another idea: “Thy name is as oil poured forth” the Torah is compared to oil and water. To water as it is written, “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye for water, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” What is the unique characteristic about water?

אין העולם יכול לעמוד בלא הם ואדם מטהר עצמו בהם, כך אין העולם יכול לעמוד בלא תורה, והתורה מלמדת את האדם היאך יטהר.
ומה המים אין אדם נוטע אילן ולא בונה בית אם אין לו מים, כך אין העולם יכול לעמוד בלא תורה.
ומה המים חיים לעולם, כך התורה חיים לעולם.
מה המים כל מי שאינו יודע לשוט בהם אובד עצמו מן העולם, כך כל מי שאינו יודע למצוא דברי תורה אובד מן העולם.
מה המים נמשכין לכל מקום שירצה, כך התורה משוכה בכל העולם.
ומה המים אין מתקיימים לא בגרגיות של כסף ולא בגרגיות של זהב, אלא בשל חרס. כך אין התורה מתקיימת בגסי הרוח אלא במי שדעתו נמוכה עליו.

The world cannot exist without water, and people purify in water, similarly the world cannot exist without water and the Torah instructs people how to purify themselves.

And what is unique about water? A person will not plant a tree nor build a house if there is no water, similarly the world cannot exist without Torah.
And just as water is the life force of the world, Torah is the life force of the world.
And just as a person who does not know how to navigate will be lost in the water, a person who does not know how to navigate Torah will be lost in the world.
And just as water flows to every place it can, so Torah flows to every place it can.
And just as water cannot be contained in silver or gold, but only ceramics, similarly, the Torah cannot exist in those who are haughty, but rather in those who are humbled by the Torah.

ואמר רבי אחא,(איוב כח:יב) "וְהַחָכְמָה מֵאַיִן תִּמָּצֵא [וְאֵי זֶה מְקוֹם בִּינָה]" מהו "מֵאַיִן"? מאותן שעושין עצמן כאין. ומה (תהלים יט:יא) "הַנֶּחֱמָדִים מִזָּהָב וּמִפַּז רָב וּמְתוּקִים מִדְּבַשׁ וְנֹפֶת צוּפִים"
מה הדבש אינו מזוהם, כך התורה אינה מזוהמת, שנאמר, (משלי ח:ח) "בְּצֶדֶק כָּל אִמְרֵי פִי אֵין בָּהֶם נִפְתָּל וְעִקֵּשׁ"

And said Rabbi Aha, “But wisdom, where shall it be found? And where is the place of understanding?” in those who make themelves as nothing. But what about the seeming contradiction in psalms, “More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”. What is unique about honey that it does not get rotten, the Torah does not get spoiled. As it says, “All the words of my mouth are in righteousness, there is nothing perverse or crooked in them.”

ונמשלה התורה לשמן. מה השמן מביא אורה לכל העולם כך התורה אורה לעולם.
ומה השמן הזה נכתש וכל מה שנכתש הוא משובח, כך התורה, כל מי שהוא נוגע בה הוא משובח לבעליה. את מוצא כל המשקין אתה יכול לזייפן, וליתן לתוכן משקין אחרים, אבל השמן הזה אתה נותנו בכל משקה שירצה והוא עולה למעלה. כך ישראל, אפילו כשהן נתונים בתחתונה הרי הם כשמן הזה שהיא נתונה למעלה שנאמר "וּנְתָנְךָ יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקֶיךָ עֶלְיוֹן עַל כָּל גּוֹיֵי הָאָרֶץ".

And the Torah is analogous to oil. What is unique about oil that it brings light to all the world, similarly, the Torah brings light to the whole world. And what is unique about olive oil, that all of it is ground and it is all valuable, so is the Torah, everyone that is involved with Torah, is valuable to its master. You find that all liquids can be counterfeited (diluted), as they can be added to other liquids, but oil cannot be mixed and when added it floats to the top. So it is with Israel, even when you put them at the bottom, they rise to the top just like the oil that rises to the top, as it says, God will set thee on high above all the nations of the earth.
