There is always an inherent danger in assuming God's function. While many exegetes explain the assignment of God's stead to Moses as a function of a spokesman, or leader, the midrash is cautioning against being in God's stead. The story with Solomon warns us of appearing like God.

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת וארא סימן ז
(שמות ז:א)"וַיֹּאמֶר יְדֹוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה רְאֵה נְתַתִּיךָ אֱלֹהִים לְפַרְעֹה וְאַהֲרֹן אָחִיךָ יִהְיֶה נְבִיאֶךָ"

And the LORD said unto Moses: 'See, I have set thee in God's stead to Pharaoh; and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.

זה שאמר הכתוב (תהלים כד:ז) "שְׂאוּ שְׁעָרִים רָאשֵׁיכֶם וְהִנָּשְׂאוּ פִּתְחֵי עוֹלָם וְיָבוֹא מֶלֶךְ הַכָּבוֹד"
שלמה אמר הפסוק הזה בשעה שהכניס את הארון לבית קדשי הקדשים. עשה ארון של עשר אמות והכניס את הארון לתוכו ונשא אותו. כיון שהגיע לפתח בית המקדש היה הפתח של עשר אמות, ואין עשר אמות יכולין ליכנס לתוך עשר אמות. ועוד שהיו טעונין בו. כיון שבאו להכניסו, לא היה יכול. עמד שלמה והיה מתבייש, ולא היה יודע מה לעשות. התחיל מתפלל לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא ואומר, (דברי הימים ב,ו:מב) "יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקִים, אַל תָּשֵׁב פְּנֵי מְשִׁיחֶיךָ, זָכְרָה לְחַסְדֵי דָּוִיד עַבְדֶּךָ"

This is what scripture says, "Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors; that the King of glory may come in." Solomon said this verse at the time when the ark was being brought to the house of the Holy of Holies. He made a cabinet ten cubits and placed the Ark in it and carried it. When he arrived at the doorway to the Holy Temple, the opening was only ten cubits, and ten cubits cannot through ten cubits. And additionally there were the people carrying the ark. When they approached to enter, they could not. Solomon stood there and was embarrassed and he did know what to do. He began to pray before the Holy One, blessed be He, and said, "O LORD God, turn not away the face of Thine anointed; remember the good deeds of David Thy servant."

מה עשה שלמה? אמרו רבותינו ז"ל, 'הלך והביא ארונו של דוד אביו, והיה מתפלל ואומר, "יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקִים, אַל תָּשֵׁב פְּנֵי מְשִׁיחֶיךָ". אמר רבי ברכיה בשם רבי חלבו, 'באותה שעה חיה דוד'.
והכל ממך לדרוש שכן דוד אמר (תהלים ל:ד) "יְדֹוָד הֶעֱלִיתָ מִן שְׁאוֹל נַפְשִׁי חִיִּיתַנִי <מיורדי> מִיָּרְדִי בוֹר"
והיה שלמה אומר 'רבומו של עולם, עשה בזכותו של זה, "זָכְרָה לְחַסְדֵי דָּוִיד עַבְדֶּךָ"'
מיד נענה. שנאמר, "יְדֹוָד אֱלֹקִים, אַל תָּשֵׁב פְּנֵי מְשִׁיחֶיךָ, זָכְרָה לְחַסְדֵי דָּוִיד עַבְדֶּךָ".
מה כתיב אחריו? (דברי הימים ב,ז:א) "וּכְכַלּוֹת שְׁלֹמֹה לְהִתְפַּלֵּל וְהָאֵשׁ יָרְדָה מֵהַשָּׁמַיִם וַתֹּאכַל הָעֹלָה וְהַזְּבָחִים וּכְבוֹד יְדֹוָד מָלֵא אֶת הַבָּיִת". ורוח הקודש צווחת ואומרת, (קהלת ד:ב) "וְשַׁבֵּחַ אֲנִי אֶת הַמֵּתִים שֶׁכְּבָר מֵתוּ מִן הַחַיִּים אֲשֶׁר הֵמָּה חַיִּים עֲדֶנָה"

What did Solomon do? Said, our rabbis, of blessed memory, 'Hwent and brought the casket of his father David, and he prayed and said,"O LORD God, turn not away the face of Thine anointed" Said Rabbi Berachia in the name of Rabbi Chalbo, 'at that moment David lived'. And it is all up to you to explicate. As Daivd himself had said, "O LORD, Thou broughtest up my soul from the nether-world; Thou didst keep me alive, that I should not go down to the pit." And Solomon said, 'Master of the universe,do it on the merit of this one, " remember the good deeds of David Thy servant." Immediately he was answered. As it says, "O LORD God, turn not away the face of Thine anointed; remember the good deeds of David Thy servant."
What is written after that? "And when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt-offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house." And th Holy Spirit raged and shouted, "Wherefore I praised the dead that are already dead more than the living that are yet alive;"

התחיל שלמה אומר, "שְׂאוּ שְׁעָרִים רָאשֵׁיכֶם וְהִנָּשְׂאוּ פִּתְחֵי עוֹלָם וְיָבוֹא מֶלֶךְ הַכָּבוֹד". באותה שעה בקשו השערים לירד ולרוץ את ראשו, שהיו סבורין שעל נפשו הוא אומר מלך הכבוד. אמרו לו, 'מי הוא זה מלך הכבוד, אמר להם ה' צבאות הוא מלך הכבוד סלה. כיון שאמר להם כך, מיד שקטו אלולי כן בקשו לרוץ ראשו ולהמיתו.

Solomon began to speak, "Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors; that the King of glory may come in." At that very moment the gates of heaven requested to descend and trample his head, that they concluded that he had stated this concept of the " King of glory". They saud to him, 'Who is the king of glory?' He said to them, The Lord of hosts is the King of Glory, Since he said this to them, immediately they quieted, if not his head would have been trampled to death.
