מדרש תנחומא (בובר) פרשת בהעלותך סימן ה
(במדבר
ח:ב) "דַּבֵּר אֶל אַהֲרֹן וְאָמַרְתָּ אֵלָיו
בְּהַעֲלֹתְךָ אֶת הַנֵּרֹת אֶל מוּל פְּנֵי הַמְּנוֹרָה יָאִירוּ שִׁבְעַת
הַנֵּרוֹת"
זה שאמר הכתוב, (תהלים יח:כט) "כִּי
אַתָּה תָּאִיר נֵרִי יְדֹוָד אֱלקַי יַגִּיהַּ חָשְׁכִּי"
'Speak unto Aaron, and say unto
him: When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of
the candlestick.' This
is what scripture said “For Thou dost light my
lamp; the LORD my God doth lighten my darkness.”
אמרו ישראל לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא, 'רבונו של עולם, אתה אומר שנאיר
לפניך, אתה אורו של עולם, והאורה [דרה] אצלך דכתיב, (דניאל ב:כב) "הוּא
גָּלֵא עַמִּיקָתָא וּמְסַתְּרָתָא יָדַע מָה בַחֲשׁוֹכָא <ונהירא>
וּנְהוֹרָא עִמֵּהּ שְׁרֵא" ואתה אומר אֶל
מוּל פְּנֵי הַמְּנוֹרָה יָאִירוּ וגו', הוי "כִּי אַתָּה תָּאִיר נֵרִי.
Said Israel before the Holy One,
blessed be He, ‘Master of the universe, You said that we should illuminate
before You, (but) You are the source of the light for the world, and the light
is [lives] next to You, as it is written, “He
revealeth the deep and secret things; He knoweth what is in the darkness, and
the light dwelleth with Him.” And You say “shall give light in
front of the candlestick.'” That is ““For Thou dost light
my lamp”
אמר להם הקדוש ברוך הוא, 'לא
שאני צריך לאורכם, אלא שתאירו לי כשם שהארתי לכם, כדי לעלות אתכם בפני כל האומות,
שיהו אומרין ראו היאך ישראל מאירין למי שהוא מאיר לכל. למה הדבר דומה? לפיקח וסומא
שהיו מהלכין בדרך, אמר לו הפיקח לסומא, 'בא ואני מסמך אותך, והיה מסמכו ומהלך.
כשנכנסו לעיר ונכנסו לבית, אמר לו פיקח לסומא, 'צא והדלק לי את הנר הזה והאר
לי.' אמר לו הסומא, 'כ'שהייתי בדרך אתה
היית מסמכני עד שנכנסתי לבית. ואתה היית מלוה אותי. ועכשיו אתה אומר לי, 'צא והדלק
לי את הנר הזה והאר לי!' אמר לו הפיקח,
שלא תהא מחזיק לי טובה, שהייתי מלווך בדרך. לכך אמרתי 'לך האר לי'.
Said to them the Holy One, blessed
be He, “It is not that I need your light, rather, you should light for me, as I
light for you, in order to raise you up in front of all the nations, that they
should say, look how Israel lights for the One who lights everything. To what
is this analogous? To a sighted man and a blind man, who were traveling. The
sighted man said to the blind man, ‘come and I will guide (support) you, and he guided him and they walked. When they got
to the city and entered the house, said the sighted man to the blind man, ‘please
go and light this candle for me and bring me light.’ Said the blind man, when
we were walking on the road, you guided me until we entered the house. And you
were escorting me. Now you tell me “‘please go and light this candle for me and
bring me light.’” Said the sighted man, that you should not owe me a favor,
that you escorted me. Therefore- ‘Go and light for me”
כך הפיקח זה הקדוש ברוך הוא,
שנאמר, (זכריה ד:י) "כִּי מִי בַז לְיוֹם קְטַנּוֹת
וְשָׂמְחוּ וְרָאוּ אֶת הָאֶבֶן הַבְּדִיל בְּיַד זְרֻבָּבֶל שִׁבְעָה אֵלֶּה
עֵינֵי יְדֹוָד הֵמָּה מְשׁוֹטְטִים בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ" והסומא אלו
ישראל, שנאמר, (ישעיהו נט:י) נְגַשְׁשָׁה
כַעִוְרִים קִיר וּכְאֵין עֵינַיִם נְגַשֵּׁשָׁה כָּשַׁלְנוּ בַצָּהֳרַיִם
כַּנֶּשֶׁף בָּאַשְׁמַנִּים כַּמֵּתִים"
והיה הקדוש ברוך הוא מנהיגם ומאיר להם, שנאמר, (שמות יג:כא) "וַידֹוָד הֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם יוֹמָם בְּעַמּוּד עָנָן לַנְחֹתָם
הַדֶּרֶךְ וְלַיְלָה בְּעַמּוּד אֵשׁ לְהָאִיר לָהֶם לָלֶכֶת יוֹמָם
וָלָיְלָה"
Thusly, the sighted man is
analogous to the Holy One, blessed be He, and it says, “For who hath despised the day of small things? even they shall see with
joy the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel, even these seven, which are the eyes
of the LORD, that run to and fro through the whole earth.' And the blind
man is Israel, as it says, “We grope for the wall like the blind, yea, as they
that have no eyes do we grope; we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; we are
in dark places like the dead.” And the Holy One, blessed be He, guides
them and lights the way for them, as it says, “And the LORD went before them by
day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of
fire, to give them light; that they might go by day and by night:”
כיון שעמד המשכן קרא הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה, ואמר לו, 'אמור להם שיאירו
לי, שנאמר "דַּבֵּר אֶל אַהֲרֹן וְאָמַרְתָּ אֵלָיו וגו'". אמרו ישראל להקדוש ברוך הוא, "כִּי אַתָּה תָּאִיר נֵרִי וגו'". ואתה אומר שנאיר לך, אמר להם הקדוש ברוך הוא, בשביל
לעלות אתכם אמרתי לכם שתאירו לי, כשם שהארתי לכם, לכך נאמר "בְּהַעֲלֹתְךָ".
Since the Sanctuary was standing, the Holy One, blessed be He,
called out to Moshe and said to him, “say to them that they should illuminate
me, as it says, “'Speak
unto Aaron, and say unto him:” Said Israel to the Holy One, blessed be He, “For Thou dost light my lamp” And you say, that we
should light You, said to them the Holy One blessed be He, to raise you I said
to you to light for me, just as I lit for you. Therefore it says, “When you lit
up”
