מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת שלח סימן ט
(במדבר יג:כד) "למקום ההוא קרא נחל אשכול על אדות האשכול אשר כרתו משם
בני ישראל"
That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the
cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
זה שאמר הכתוב (ישעיהו מו:י ) "מגיד מראשית אחרית ומקדם אשר לא נעשו אמר עצתי תקום
וכל חפצי אעשה" שהכל היה צפוי לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא. אשכול, אוהבו של אברהם היה. ונקרא 'אשכול' על אודות
האשכול שעתידים ישראל לכרות אשכול ממקומו.
This is what The Scripture says, “Declaring the end from
the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done; saying: 'My
counsel shall stand, and all My pleasure will I do';” That everything
was expected by the Holy One, blessed be He. Eshkol was one of the admirers of
Abraham. And he was called Eshkol, on account of the clusters that were to be
cut by Israel from his region.
(במדבר יג:כו-כח) "וילכו ויבאו אל משה ואל אהרן ואל כל עדת בני ישראל אל
מדבר פארן קדשה וישיבו אתם דבר ואת כל העדה ויראום את פרי הארץ. ויספרו לו ויאמרו באנו
אל הארץ אשר שלחתנו וגם זבת חלב ודבש הוא וזה פריה. אפס כי עז העם הישב בארץ והערים
בצרות גדלת מאד וגם ילדי הענק ראינו שם"
“And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron,
and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of
Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the
congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. And they told him,
and said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth
with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Howbeit the people
that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very
great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.”
כך דרכם
של מספרי לשון הרע. פותחין בטובה, ומשלימין ברעה. (במדבר יג:כט) "עמלק יושב בארץ הנגב והחתי והיבוסי והאמרי יושב בהר
והכנעני יושב על הים ועל יד הירדן" מה ראו לפתוח בעמלק? משל למה הדבר דומה? לתנוק
שסרח ולקה ברצועה. כשמבקשין להפחידו מזכירין לו הרצועה שלקה בה. כך היה עמלק, רצועה
רעה לישראל. ומה ראה לישב לו על הספר על דרך כניסתן של ישראל לארץ? אלא כך צוהו, עשו
זקנו לקדמן לדרך, ועקר ממקומו וישב לו בדרך, שנאמר (במדבר יד:מה) "וירד העמלקי והכנעני הישב בהר ההוא ויכום ויכתום עד
החרמה" אלו הגבורים יושבין על הדרך, ועל יד הירדן. לפיכך נתכוונו המרגלים לשבור
לבן של ישראל. שנאמר, (במדבר לב:ט)
"ויעלו עד נחל אשכול ויראו את הארץ ויניאו את לב בני ישראל לבלתי בא אל הארץ אשר
נתן להם יקוק"
This is the method of those who practice evil speech. They open with
something pleasant and finish with evil. “Amalek dwelleth in the
land of the South; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in
the mountains; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of
the Jordan.'” Why did they begin their report with Amalek? It is
analogous to a child who was punished
with a leather strap. Whenever you need a deterrent, you simply show him the strap
and he is frightened. Amalek was similar- they were the strap to Israel. And
why was “he” [Amalek] given a place to wait for them to approach Israel? Rather
he was commanded by Eisav to the ancestors. And he uprooted himself [Amalek}
from his natural place and placed himself purposely intercepting Israel’s path.
As it says, “Then the Amalekite and the Canaanite, who dwelt in that
hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.”
These are the brave ones who sat on the way and on the path. Therefore the
Spies choose to break the hearts of Israel.
As it says, “For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the
land, they turned away the heart of the children of Israel, that they should
not go into the land which the LORD had given them”
