If Torah is free for all who want it- why don’t
more people take advantage of it? Because it takes a special person to truly
acquire Torah. Torah is not going to make you better- you need to be better to
be worthy of Torah.
מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת במדבר סימן ו
(במדבר א:א) "וַיְדַבֵּר יְדֹוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית
לְצֵאתָם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לֵאמֹר"
And the LORD spoke unto Moses in
the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second
month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt,
saying:
אשריך משה! ששים רבוא עומדין, והכהנים והלוים והזקנים והכל עומדין,
ומכלם, לא דבר אלא עם משה. שנאמר," וַיְדַבֵּר יְדֹוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי"
Fortunate are you Moshe! Sixty myriads in attendance, and the Kohanim,
the leviim and the elders standing, and from all of them, not one was spoken to
except for Moshe. As it says, "And the LORD
spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai"
ולמה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי?, מכאן שנו רבותינו בשלשה דברים נתנה התורה באש ובמים ובמדבר.
באש שנאמר,(שמות יט:יח) "וְהַר סִינַי עָשַׁן כֻּלּוֹ
מִפְּנֵי אֲשֶׁר יָרַד עָלָיו יְדֹוָד בָּאֵשׁ וַיַּעַל עֲשָׁנוֹ כְּעֶשֶׁן
הַכִּבְשָׁן וַיֶּחֱרַד כָּל הָהָר מְאֹד"
במים שנאמר, (שופטים ה:ד) "יְדֹוָד בְּצֵאתְךָ מִשֵּׂעִיר
בְּצַעְדְּךָ מִשְּׂדֵה אֱדוֹם אֶרֶץ רָעָשָׁה גַּם שָׁמַיִם נָטָפוּ גַּם עָבִים
נָטְפוּ מָיִם"
במדבר שנאמר, (במדבר ג:יד) "וַיְדַבֵּר
יְדֹוָד אֶל מֹשֶׁה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי לֵאמֹר"
And why in the wilderness of
Sinai? From here the Rabbis taught, The Torah was given under three conditions,
in fire, water and wilderness.
In Fire, as it is written,
"Now mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the LORD descended upon
it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the
whole mount quaked greatly."
In water, as it says,
"LORD, when Thou didst go forth out of Seir, when Thou didst march out of
the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, yea, the clouds
dropped water."
In the wilderness as it says,
"And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying:"
למה נתנה בשלשה דברים אלו? לומר לך, מה דברים הללו חנם לכל באי עולם,
אף התורה חנם לכל באי עולם. שנאמר, (ישעיהו נה:א) "הוֹי כָּל
צָמֵא לְכוּ לַמַּיִם וַאֲשֶׁר אֵין לוֹ כָּסֶף לְכוּ שִׁבְרוּ וֶאֱכֹלוּ וּלְכוּ
שִׁבְרוּ בְּלוֹא כֶסֶף וּבְלוֹא מְחִיר יַיִן וְחָלָב"
Why was the Torah given in these
three conditions? To tell you, just as these are free to the world, so the
Torah is free to the whole world. As it says, "Ho, every one that
thirsteth, come ye for water, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat;
yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price."
בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי: למה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי? אלא, כל מי שאינו עושה עצמו
הפקר במדבר אינו יכול לקנות את התורה לכך נאמר " בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי”
In the wilderness of Sinai, Why
in the wilderness of Sinai? Rather, anyone who does not humble himself (make
himself without any worth) as the wilderness cannot acquire the Torah,
therefore it says, "In the wilderness of Sinai"
