Often, people look at what seem to be the incongruities of logic within Judaism to prove that the Torah, is not of divine origin. This midrash, closes with the Parah Adumah, the red heifer, from this week's parsha. The parah adumah's ashes purifies those defiled by death, yet renders impure for the day the person who prepared the red heifer. Quite resolutely, the midrash proclaims that it is only God who could create the system with such finely thought out "incongruities".

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת חקת סימן ג
(במדבר יט:ב) "זֹאת חֻקַּת הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְדֹוָד לֵאמֹר דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיִקְחוּ אֵלֶיךָ פָרָה אֲדֻמָּה תְּמִימָה אֲשֶׁר אֵין בָּהּ מוּם אֲשֶׁר לֹא עָלָה עָלֶיהָ עֹל"

"This is the statute of the law which the Lord commanded, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, and they should take to you a red heifer, perfect, without blemish, and upon which never came yoke"

זה שאמר הכתוב (איוב יד:ד) "מִי יִתֵּן טָהוֹר מִטָּמֵא, לֹא אֶחָד"

This is what is said in the scripture "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one."

כגון אברהם מתרח, חזקיה מאחז, יאשיה מאמון, מרדכי משמעי, ישראל מאומות העולם, העולם הבא מן העולם הזה.
מי עשה כן? מי גזר כן? מי צוה כן?
לא אחד, לא יחידו של עולם?!

For example, Abraham came from Terach, Hizkiyah from Achaz, Josiah from Amon, Mordechai from Shim'i, Israel from the nations of the world, the world to come from the present world.
Who did this? Who decreed this? Who commanded this?
Not one, None other than the Unique One of the universe.

תמן תנינן: בהרת כגריס טמא. מאי כגריס? כחצי פול באדם טמא. פרחה בכולה טהור.
מי עשה כן? מי גזר כן? מי צוה כן?
לא אחד, לא יחידו של עולם?!

We also learned, a leprous spot as big as a 'gris' causes impurity. What is a 'gris'? The size of a half ful bean on a man. If it expands it becomes pure.
Who did this? Who decreed this? Who commanded this?
Not one, None other than the Unique One of the universe.

תמן תנינן: האשה שמת ולדה בתוך מעיה, והושיטה היה את ידה ונגע בה, החיה טמאה טומאת ז' והאשה טהורה עד שיצא הולד. המת בבית הבית טהור, יצא מתוכו הבית טמא.
מי עשה כן? מי צוה כן? מי גזר כן?
לא אחד, לא יחידו של עולם.

We also learned, a woman who miscarried and the fetus is still within her, and the baby stuck out its hand (during delivery) and the midwife touched the hand, the midwife is impure for seven full days and the mother is pure until the fetus is delivered. The dead fetus is still within the mother and the mother is pure but as soon as it is delivered the mother is impure.
Who did this? Who decreed this? Who commanded this?
Not one, None other than the Unique One of the universe.

תמן תנינן: כל העוסקין בפרה מתחלה ועד סוף מטמאין בגדים. היא גופה מטהרת בגדים. אלא אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא 'חקה חקקתי, גזרה גזרתי, ואין אתה רשאי לעבור על גזרתי'

We also learned, all who are busy with the red heifer from the beginning until the end are rendered impure at the level of clothes. But the heifer itself purifies even clothes. But said The Holy One blessed be He, 'A statute I have established, a decree I decreed, and you cannot transgress my statute.
