Are there mistakes that we cannot or are not allowed to correct? More correctly, are there mistakes that are simply sins of omission but required more active resistance at the time that we cannot mend no matter what?
I have only included a short passage from the concluding midrash of the second section. It is moving to see the pleas of Moshe and how unfair the midrash seems to leave the lack of resolution.

מדרש תנחומא )ורשא( פרשת ואתחנן סימן א
(דברים ג:כג) "וָאֶתְחַנַּן אֶל יְדֹוָד בָּעֵת הַהִוא לֵאמֹר"
(דברים ג:כג) "וָאֶתְחַנַּן אֶל יְדֹוָד בָּעֵת הַהִוא לֵאמֹר"
“And I pleaded with the Lord at that time saying”
This is what the scripture says: “It is all one--therefore I say: He destroys the innocent and the wicked”
זה שאמר הכתוב (איוב ט:כב)"אַחַת הִיא עַל כֵּן אָמַרְתִּי תָּם וְרָשָׁע הוּא מְכַלֶּה"
אמר משה: רבונו של עולם, אחת היא, הכל שוין לפניך, גזירה אחת לצדיקים ולרשעים. וכן שלמה אומר (קהלת ט:ב) "הַכֹּל כַּאֲשֶׁר לַכֹּל, מִקְרֶה אֶחָד לַצַּדִּיק וְלָרָשָׁע, לַטּוֹב וְלַטָּהוֹר וְלַטָּמֵא, וְלַזֹּבֵחַ וְלַאֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ זֹבֵחַ, כַּטּוֹב כַּחֹטֶא הַנִּשְׁבָּע כַּאֲשֶׁר שְׁבוּעָה יָרֵא"
Moshe said, Master of the Universe, it is one, everything is equal before you. It is one decree for the righteous and the evildoers. And thus Solomon said “All things come alike to all; there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrifices and to him that sacrifices not; as is the good, so is the sinner, and he that swears, as he that fears an oath.
דבר אחר: "הַכֹּל כַּאֲשֶׁר לַכֹּל " אמר משה לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא, רבון העולם, הכל שוין לפניך תם ורשע אתה מכלה. מרגלים הכעיסו לפניך בדבת הארץ שנאמר (במדבר יג:לב) "וַיּוֹצִיאוּ דִּבַּת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תָּרוּ אֹתָהּ אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר עָבַרְנוּ בָהּ לָתוּר אֹתָהּ אֶרֶץ אֹכֶלֶת יוֹשְׁבֶיהָ הִוא וְכָל הָעָם אֲשֶׁר רָאִינוּ בְתוֹכָהּ אַנְשֵׁי מִדּוֹת"
Another word: “All things come alike to all” Moshe said before the Holy One, blessed be He, Master of the Universe, everyone is equal before you, perfect and evil you destroy. The spies angered you and is says “And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.”
ואני ששמשתי את בניך לפניך במדבר ארבעים שנה מקרה אחד לי ולהם.
And I, who served your children in the wilderness for forty years, it is the same verse to me and them.
משל, למה הדבר דומה?
למלך שבקש לישא אשה. שלח שלוחיו לראותה אם נאה אם לאו. הלכו וראו אותה, באו למלך ואמרו לו, ראינו אותה ואין כעורה ועזובה כמוה. שמע שושבינו ואמר ליה לא כן מרי אלא אין אשה נאה ממנה בעולם, בא לישא אותה. אמר אבי הנערה לשלוחי המלך נשבע אני בחיי המלך שאין אחד מכם נכנס כאן מפני שבזיתם אותה לפני המלך. בא השושבין ליכנס אמר לו אף אתה לא תכנס, אמר לו השושבין, אני לא ראיתיה ואמרתי למלך שאין נאה הימנה בעולם והם אמרו אין כעורה הימנה. ועכשיו הנח לי ואראה אם כדברי אם כדבריהם.

What is this similar to?
To a king that wanted to marry a woman. He sent his emissaries to see if she was pleasing or not. They went and saw her. They returned to the king and reported that they saw her and that there is no one uglier than her. His guard heard the report and said to him, this is not so sire. Rather there is no one finer than her in the world, come marry her. The father of the young woman said to the king’s emissaries, I swear to you on my life that not one of you will ever set foot here because you belittled my daughter in fornt of the king. The King’s guard went to enter an the father said that even he could not enter. The guard said that he never saw the girl and that he told the king that there was no one finer in the world, and they said that there was none uglier than her. Now let me see if my words are correct or theirs.
כך אמר משה לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא, רבוני המרגלים הוציאו דבה על הארץ ואמרו ארץ אוכלת יושביה, אבל אני לא ראיתי אותה ושבחתיה לפני בניך ואמרתי "כי ה' אלהיך מביאך אל ארץ טובה". ועכשיו אראה אותה אם כדברי אם כדבריהם. שנאמר "אעברה נא ואראה את הארץ הטובה אשר בעבר הירדן" אמר ליה "כי לא תעבור", אמר לו משה אם כן הכל שוין לפניך תם ורשע אתה מכלה?!
This is what Moshe said to the Holy One, Blessed be He, the spies belittled the land and said that it was a land that ate its inhabitants. But I did not see her and I praised her before your children and I said that The Lord your God brings you to a good land” And now I will see if I am right or they are. As it says, “please, I will pass and see the good land that is across the Jordan” He said to him, “you will not pass” Moshe said to Him, if so everything is equal before you, pure and evil you destroy.
