What does it mean to be appreciative? What does it mean to be repentant?
The midrash links the two.

מדרש תנחומא (ורשא) פרשת צו סימן ו
(ויקרא ז:יב) "אִם עַל תּוֹדָה יַקְרִיבֶנּוּ וְהִקְרִיב עַל זֶבַח הַתּוֹדָה חַלּוֹת מַצּוֹת בְּלוּלֹת בַּשֶּׁמֶן וּרְקִיקֵי מַצּוֹת מְשֻׁחִים בַּשָּׁמֶן וְסֹלֶת מֻרְבֶּכֶת חַלֹּת בְּלוּלֹת בַּשָּׁמֶן"

If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour soaked.

ראה היאך הקדוש ברוך הוא סולח לעונותיהם של ישראל. ראה מה היו מקריבין להקדוש ברוך הוא: "וְהִקְרִיב עַל זֶבַח הַתּוֹדָה". אלא אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא, 'מי שיש לו פר יביא פר, מי שיש לו איל יביא איל, ומי שיש לו שה יביא שה, ומי שיש לו יונה יביא יונה, ומי שאין לו אחד מכל אלו יביא סולת. ומי שאין לו סולת ולא כלום יביא דברים.' שנאמר, (הושע יד:ג) " קְחוּ עִמָּכֶם דְּבָרִים וְשׁוּבוּ אֶל יְדֹוָד אִמְרוּ אֵלָיו כָּל תִּשָּׂא עָוֹן וְקַח טוֹב וּנְשַׁלְּמָה פָרִים שְׂפָתֵינוּ" ותאמר שהוא מקובל. אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא, הן "וּנְשַׁלְּמָה פָרִים שְׂפָתֵינוּ" למה? שאין תשובה לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא יותר מן הודייה. לכך נאמר, "אִם עַל תּוֹדָה יַקְרִיבֶנּוּ."

Behold how the Holy One, blessed be He, forgives the iniquities of Israel. Behold, what did they offer to the Holy One, blesses be He:” then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving” Rather, said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘Whoever has a bull should bring a bull, and whomever has a ram should bring a ram, and whomever has a sheep should bring a sheep, and whomever has a dove should bring a dove, and whoever does not possess those should bring flour. And whoever, does not possess even flour, and has nothing, should bring words.’ As it says, “Take with you words, and return unto the LORD; say unto Him: 'Forgive all iniquity, and accept that which is good; so will we render for bullocks the offering of our lips” and say that it is accepted. Said the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘that is “we render for bullocks the offering of our lips”’ Why? Because there is not a more genuine repentance before the Holy One, blessed be He than sincere appreciation and gratitude. Therefore it says, “If he offer it for a thanksgiving”
